Giants Sign Kyle Drabek; Will Audition As Pitcher/Infielder

Jul 19, 2016 4:25 PM

The San Francisco Giants have signed former first-round draft pick Kyle Drabek to a Minor League contract.

The club plans to audition Drabek as a pitcher and infielder.

"At our request, Drabek is taking ground balls and giving us a look at him as an infielder [as he was in high school]," Giants general manager Bobby Evans said. "But we're not ruling out his continuing with us from the mound."

Drabek, 28, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies as the 18th overall pick in the 2006 first-year player draft and received a signing bonus of $1.55 million, but he has failed to live up to expectations in professional ball.

Astros GM: Getting Gurriel 'Huge Deal For Us'

Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow first saw Yulieski Gurriel play a decade ago in a tournament in Amsterdam.

He imagined him playing in the major leagues and made that dream a reality Saturday when he signed the Cuban free agent to a five-year deal with the Astros.

"To be able to get him now really in the prime of his career ... is a huge deal for us," Luhnow said. "It's probably the most exciting day since I've been here except for the wild-card win against the Yankees."
