Phillies Sign Josh Fields To Minor League Contract

Dec 13, 2014 1:05 PM

Josh Fields, a former first round pick and top prospect, has signed a contract with the Phillies.

After hitting 23 homers in 100 games as a rookie in the Chicago organization in 2007, Fields hit just .228 with 10 homers and a .649 OPS in his next 106 games.

Fields has experience in the corner infield and corner outfield spots, so he'll compete for a bench gig during spring training under a Minor League deal.

Scott Baker Signs With Cubs

Aug 26, 2014 12:36 PM

The Cubs have signed Scott Baker, who missed all of the 2012 season following elbow surgery.

"I truly believe if you put the work in and prepare yourself for every start, that's the best you can do," Baker said. "Once you go out there and you are fully prepared then it's about executing pitches. If I can execute pitches then I can be a very productive pitcher and give this team a chance to win some ballgames. In saying that, I think we're going to have a lot of fun. I'm excited working with the coaching staff and medical staff.

"It's a big season for me and the organization. I look forward to giving the team a chance to win."

Theo Epstein acknowledged the risk in signing a pitcher coming off Tommy John surgery.
