Shohei Ohtani Won't Pitch Tuesday; Mike Trout Dealing With Soreness

Aug 31, 2021 8:53 AM

Shohei Ohtani will not take the mound for the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night against the New York Yankees in order to give his right hand extra time to heal.

Ohtani was hit in his pitching hand by a 93 mph fastball from Ryan Weathers while swinging during the first inning of Saturday's game against the San Diego Padres.

Joe Maddon compared this situation to late last month, when Ohtani had a start pushed back a couple of days after he took a foul ball off his right thumb in the dugout during a game.

In addition, Mike Trout is experiencing soreness in his right calf after running the bases on Saturday and discussions about shutting him down for the rest of the season are rapidly approaching.

Aug 27, 2021 7:13 AM

Jordan Lawler, the sixth overall pick in the 2021 Major League Baseball draft, will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery after playing just two professional games.

Arizona Diamondbacks farm director Josh Barfield says the 19-year-old shortstop will undergo a procedure to repair a posterior labrum tear. Lawlar should be recovered in time for the 2022 season.

Lawlar, signed to an above-slot $6.71 million signing bonus, was considered one of the top players available in this year's draft.

Noah Syndergaard Calls Rehab Start 'A Sigh Of Relief'

Aug 27, 2021 7:06 AM

Noah Syndergaard threw 16 pitches Thursday night in a rehab start for High-A Brooklyn, his first outing in months following a setback during his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Syndergaard gave up a leadoff homer, the only hit he allowed in one inning. He had one strikeout.

"It's definitely a sigh of relief and a step in the right direction," he said.

Syndergaard was shut down in May with elbow discomfort as he was rehabbing from March 2020 Tommy John surgery.

The New York Mets pitcher revealed Thursday night that doctors advised him not to throw his slider for the rest of the year because perhaps the torque on his elbow from that pitch caused his setback. So on his own, he has scrapped his curveball for now, too.

Astros GM: Justin Verlander Won't Pitch In 2021

Aug 26, 2021 9:28 AM

Justin Verlander won't return to pitch for the Houston Astros this season.

Verlander had Tommy John surgery last October. While his rehab is going well, general manager James Click confirmed in a radio interview that Verlander won't return in 2021.

The typical Tommy John surgery rehab timetable is 14-16 months, so Verlander returning this year, even as a reliever in September, would have been very aggressive.

Aug 26, 2021 9:19 AM

The New York Mets make get a huge boost to their starting rotation as the playoffs near.

"We'll see where we go from here," Luis Rojas said. "There's not a progression mapped out yet on how things are going to keep going, but at least getting to play catch today, that's great news for us."

Clayton Kershaw Calls Long Absence 'Frustrating'

Aug 26, 2021 9:14 AM

Clayton Kershaw threw a fastball-only bullpen session on Tuesday and had an aggressive game of catch on Wednesday as he builds length in hopes of returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers' starting rotation.

"Just as long as my elbow doesn't hurt, we're in a good spot," Kershaw said. "It's been frustrating, it's been a long time, it shouldn't have taken this long. It's frustrating on my part. But hopefully I can be around for the fun part and help us in September and October."

Kershaw hasn't pitched since July 3 because of inflammation around his left elbow. He admittedly tried to ramp back up too quickly, suffering lingering soreness after a three-inning simulated game a little more than three weeks later and once again shutting it down as a result.

A's Chris Bassitt Undergoes Successful Facial Surgery

Aug 25, 2021 9:22 AM

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Chris Bassitt took a 100-mph line drive off the bat of Chicago White Sox outfielder Brian Goodwin to the face last week.

Bassitt didn't take any damage to the eye area, but he did suffer a facial fracture. He was kept in Chicago while the doctors waited for the swelling to go down before performing surgery.

He underwent surgery on Tuesday, according to the Athletics.

"Chris Bassitt had successful facial surgery today in Chicago with Dr. Peter Revenaugh at the Rush Medical Center. Dr. Revenaugh was able to stabilize and plate the tripod fracture with good fixation and debride other small fractured bones from the incident. Chris is stable and resting comfortably and will have follow-up appointments upon his arrival to Oakland. The A's anticipate Bassitt will return to the Bay Area later this week."
