Justin Verlander won't return to pitch for the Houston Astros this season.

Verlander had Tommy John surgery last October. While his rehab is going well, general manager James Click confirmed in a radio interview that Verlander won't return in 2021.

The typical Tommy John surgery rehab timetable is 14-16 months, so Verlander returning this year, even as a reliever in September, would have been very aggressive.
