Mike Trout Out Until After All-Star Break

Jun 29, 2021 9:08 AM

The Los Angeles Angels have moved Mike Trout to the 60-day injured list, ruling him out through the All-Star break.

Trout swung a bat in a batting cage Monday for the first time since he strained his right calf on May 17.

"He's doing really well, actually," Joe Maddon said. "He's on pace. He's on target."

Trout's injury is more than 50% healed, Maddon said. Trout will go on a minor league rehabilitation assignment, probably after the All-Star break. He is eligible to return July 17.

Mike Soroka Suffers 'Complete Re-Tear' Of Achilles Tendon

Jun 28, 2021 9:12 AM

Mike Soroka has suffered a re-tear of his right Achilles tendon and will require season-ending surgery, per the Atlanta Braves.

An MRI revealed a complete re-tear of the tendon that he originally injured in August of last year. The pitcher "felt a pop" on Thursday while walking to the clubhouse at Truist Park.

Soroka, 23, has made just three starts since the end of the 2019 season.

Cleveland's Josh Naylor Carted Off Field After Collision

Jun 28, 2021 9:01 AM

Josh Naylor and Ernie Clement smacked into each other in the outfield, a scary moment Sunday that left Naylor with a significant injury and both dugouts shaken.

After an 8-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona said Naylor had suffered a broken bone -- but he wasn't sure which one -- and was being treated at a hospital.

"That's obviously playing out in front of anyone's eyes," Rocco Baldelli said. "You can't, you know, once you see that, you're not going to unsee it, and it brings out feelings, too, and it's hard for people to sometimes regardless of what team you're on, refocus, and there's a lot of people that care about that young man, and we'll be thinking about him as time goes on."

The accident occurred in the fourth inning when Jorge Polanco checked his swing and made contact, sending a flare into the shallow outfield.

Naylor went flying and spinning after the collision and had his right foot catch underneath him, twisting the foot the wrong way.

Oakland's Mike Fiers Gets Injection, Won't Throw For 4 Weeks

Jun 25, 2021 9:02 AM

Mike Fiers likely won't throw for at least another four weeks after an injection for his sprained right elbow.

Bob Melvin said Thursday that Fiers, who last pitched May 6, won't need surgery after he felt discomfort when trying to resume throwing this week.

"Nothing structural as far as needing surgery at this point, but he will get a PRP injection and then probably no-throw for up to four weeks," Melvin said. "So it's going to be a while before he even starts playing catch again."

Melvin said the Oakland Athletics still believe there is a possibility for the 36-year-old Fiers to pitch again this season.

Jacob deGrom Confident Latest Injury 'Is Nothing'

Jun 17, 2021 8:56 AM

Jacob deGrom will get an MRI on his right shoulder on Thursday after leaving Wednesday's start against the visiting Chicago Cubs because of soreness.

"I felt good warming up, felt really good in the first and second innings, then there in the third my shoulder was sore," deGrom said. "This is getting old. I want to be out there competing instead of coming out of these games with these little [things]."

deGrom, 32, struck out eight of the nine batters he faced over three innings, and he drove in a run with an RBI single in the second inning.

"I think it's three separate issues," deGrom said of his injuries this season. "I think the lat was something to do with the swing. The elbow I didn't think too much of ... I was pretty confident that that was nothing. And I'm pretty confident that this is nothing. We did some tests and ruled out anything serious."

Tyler Glasnow Blames MLB Crackdown For UCL Injury

Jun 17, 2021 9:05 AM

Tyler Glasnow sounded off on Major League Baseball's crackdown of foreign substances Tuesday after he was diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament and a flexor tendon strain.

The Tampa Bay Rays pitcher said, in advance of MLB's initiative, he did away with using sunscreen -- the only foreign substance he said he has ever used -- two starts ago and felt sore the next day due to needing to adjust his grips. He did the same in Monday's outing and then felt something "pop" in his arm.

"I switched my fastball grip and my curveball grip," Glasnow said. "I had to put my fastball deeper into my hand and grip it way harder. Instead of holding my curveball at the tip of my fingers, I had to dig it deeper into my hand.

"I'm choking the s--- out of all my pitches."

He said he understands what MLB is trying to do in eliminating Spider Tack and other sticky substances but has an issue with doing it midseason and eliminating everything all at once.

Shane Bieber Lands On 10-Day IL With Shoulder Injury

Jun 15, 2021 8:37 AM

Shane Bieber has a strained right shoulder and will not pitch for at least two weeks.

The reigning American League Cy Young winner complained of tightness in his shoulder after pitching Sunday and underwent an MRI.

Bieber allowed a season-high 10 hits and five runs while losing to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

"Today, I got beat for not executing," Bieber said. "That's obvious. Whether it's curveball, fastball, slider, changeup, cutter, it doesn't really matter. I just got to be better and continue to hit spots, execute throughout the game, strike one, two and three and then continue momentum."

He is 7-4 this season in 14 starts covering 90 2/3 innings. He has 130 strikeouts.

White Sox Place Nick Madrigal On 60-Day IL

Jun 11, 2021 8:10 AM

The Chicago White Sox have placed Nick Madrigal on the 60-day injured list with a right hamstring tear.

The No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 amateur draft could miss the remainder of the season. He was hitting .365 (27-for-74) with two homers and 10 RBIs in his past 20 games.

"It's a big blow, but the games still count and we have to go forward," Tony La Russa said.

Mike Trout Has No Timetable For Return

Jun 9, 2021 8:31 AM

Mike Trout's strained right calf is feeling better, but the star has no timetable for his return to the Los Angeles Angels.

Trout landed on the injured list May 18. The Angels said at the time that Trout would miss six to eight weeks, which would sideline him through the All-Star break.

"Today was probably my best day yet, just tolerance-wise. As far as activities, I'm doing as much as I can to strengthen around the calf muscle," Trout said.

Trout said he would like to start jogging soon but doesn't have a timetable on when he would be able to do that, much less resume baseball activities. He said he is walking on a treadmill but not with any intensity.

"I'm happy with my progress so far. It has been good the last couple of days," he said. "I should have a better idea on a return date once I start moving around, as in jogging and running."
