The Houston Astros are looking to add another bat despite already agreeing to terms with Jose Abreu to play first base.

The Astros could bring back Yuli Gurriel for his age-39 season despite adding Abreu to replace him at first. They could also re-sign Michael Brantley.

Houston has interest in free agent Michael Conforto as well.

The San Diego Padres may be a dark horse in the race to sign free agent Xander Bogaerts, according to a report.

The Padres were interested in Jose Abreu to fill their opening at first base, but the former AL MVP signed with the Houston Astros.

A.J. Preller has checked in with Bogaerts' agent, Scott Boras, about the shortstop's willingness to play other infield positions.

The Toronto Blue Jays are closing in on an agreement to hire Don Mattingly as bench coach, according to multiple reports.

Mattingly has spent the past 12 years managing, spending time with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins.

The Tampa Bay Rays have reached out to the representatives for free agent Jacob deGrom, according to the report.

The Texas Rangers, New York Mets and Yankees have also been linked to deGrom this offseason.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants could enter the bidding for the former Cy Young winner as well.

The Major League Baseball Players Association has voted to extend the contract of executive director Tony Clark through 2027.

The 50-year-old Clark -- who had a 15-year big league career, mostly with the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks -- helped broker the players' current labor deal with MLB. After several contentious months of negotiations, the MLBPA and MLB agreed to the new deal in March, which saved a full 162-game season.

Former Detroit Tigers third baseman Jeimer Candelario has reached an agreement with the Washington Nationals on a contract for the 2023 season, sources confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday.

Candelario, 29, was non-tendered by Detroit earlier this month, making him a free agent after he compiled a career-low .633 OPS in 2022. He'll have a chance to rebuild his value in Washington, where the Nationals are in the early portion of a rebuilding phase.

The Philadelphia Phillies remain the leading contender to sign Trea Turner this offseason.

Mark Feinsand said last week that the shortstop was Philadelphia's "top target" in free agency.

On Monday, Joel Sherman said an agreement between Turner and the Phillies has a "good chance to happen."

The Los Angeles Dodgers were set to meet with Justin Verlander on Monday, according to a report.

The New York Mets and Yankees are also interested in the reigning American League Cy Young winner. The incumbent Houston Astros have a shot to re-sign Verlander as well.

However, Verlander fits the Dodgers' preference for a lucrative short-term deal.

The Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros are among the clubs that have shown interest in free agent Michael Conforto.

Conforto has previously been linked to the Chicago Cubs, New York Mets and Yankees.

The outfielder suffered a right shoulder injury during the Major League lockout and underwent surgery in April.
