Juan Soto On Trade Deadline: 'I Just Want To Get It Over With'

Jul 31, 2022 10:06 PM

Juan Soto walked off the field at Nationals Park on Sunday with just over 48 hours to go until the Trade Deadline. For the 23-year-old star outfielder at the center of the baseball rumor circuit, the clock is ticking toward 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

“I just want to get it over with and see what’s going to happen,” Soto said following the Nationals’ 5-0 loss to the Cardinals. “I mean, just go over that day and start over here or wherever I’m at.”

Reid Detmers 3rd Pitcher With No-No, Immaculate Inning In One Year

Jul 31, 2022 8:14 PM

Three up, three down, with all three batters struck out on three pitches each.

While the "Immaculate Inning" isn't nearly as rare as it once was -- there were none from 1929-52 and eight alone in 2017 -- any pitcher who can plow through a big league lineup on nine straight strikes deserves a special place in the record book.

"I've been pitching seven or eight years, and I just [didn't] know what [an immaculate inning] is," Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen said after tossing one in 2017. "But now I know, and it's awesome."

Here are the pitchers who have accomplished the impressive feat:

• Reid Detmers, Angels, July 31, 2022

Second inning vs. Rangers: Ezequiel Duran, Kole Calhoun, Charlie Culberson

Detmers is the first rookie and just the third pitcher ever to throw an immaculate inning and a no-hitter in the same season, joining Sandy Koufax (1962, '63 and '64) and Mike Fiers (2015).

Mike Trout Optimistic He's 'Going To Play Here Soon'

Jul 31, 2022 5:23 PM

In the span of four days, Mike Trout went from his career in peril to possibly picking a bat by the end of next week.

The Angels star visited Thursday with Dr. Robert Watkins, a back specialist and co-director of the Marina Spine Clinic in Los Angeles. Trout is slated to begin rotational exercises Wednesday and could return to swinging a bat shortly after that.

"It went from my career is over to now hopefully I'm going to play here soon," Trout said with a laugh. "Coming out of the workouts, it's been great every day. It's getting better. It's very promising to start rotational stuff. I'll do that for a couple days in the weight room and if that goes well, I'll start swinging."

Jul 31, 2022 5:16 PM

The San Francisco Giants placed shortstop Thairo Estrada on the 7-day concussion IL on Sunday while also trading for Chicago Cubs minor league shortstop Dixon Machado.

Estrada, 26, was hit in the helmet by a pitch from Mark Leiter Jr. in the fifth inning of Saturday's win by the Giants and had to be helped off the field. With Brandon Crawford out of the lineup with a knee injury, the Giants were in need of a shortstop.

Machado, 30, was hitting .312 with a .402 on-base percentage for Triple-A Iowa and will start for the Giants against the Cubs on Sunday night.

Mariners standout rookie Julio Rodríguez is headed to the injured list with a right wrist injury, manager Scott Servais said on Sunday.

Giants Retire Will Clark's No. 22 During Pregame Ceremony

Jul 30, 2022 11:27 PM

Will Clark officially joined the pantheon of Giants legends on Saturday afternoon, when the club retired his No. 22 during a pregame ceremony at Oracle Park.

Clark became the 11th Giant to have his number retired, taking his place between Monte Irvin’s No. 20 and Willie Mays’ No. 24 on the row of numbers that hang off the club level in the left-field corner of the ballpark.

“This right here is my Hall of Fame,” Clark said during an emotional 15-minute speech. “To be recognized with the incredible names of this historical franchise is beyond belief. I always wanted to win and have others around me be winners. We all did that together here. I am Will ‘the Thrill’ Clark, I am part of San Francisco and I am forever a Giant.”

Aaron Judge Hits 42nd HR, Second-Fastest To 200 Home Runs

Jul 30, 2022 6:12 PM

On an afternoon that opened with several Old-Timers expressing admiration for Aaron Judge’s special season, the slugger again showed that he’s very much in his prime, belting his Major League-leading 42nd home run in the Yankees’ 8-2 victory over the Royals on Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

Judge cracked a two-run shot, his fourth long ball in the last three games, as the Yanks rolled to a convincing win on Old-Timers’ Day. Judge is the first Yankee to hit 42 home runs before Aug. 1, breaking a tie with Babe Ruth, who hit 41 in 1928.

Also of significance: Judge’s second-inning blast off Jonathan Heasley was the 200th homer of his career, coming in his 671st career game -- only Ryan Howard (658 games) reached the milestone quicker.
