Nolan Arenado Upset Over Rockies' Inactivity

Jan 21, 2020 8:52 AM

Nolan Arenado reacted to recent comments by Jeff Bridich by accusing the Colorado Rockies of "a lot of disrespect from people there that I don't want to be a part of."

Bridich has declared that the Rockies have ended trade talks involving the third baseman.

Arenado is upset over Colorado's inaction this offseason less than a year after they signed him to an eight-year, $260 million extension. The Rockies are coming off a 71-91 season.

He holds both a full no-trade clause and an opt-out clause that allows him to void the deal after the 2021 season.

Matt Carpenter Apologized To Cardinals For Disappointing Season

Jan 21, 2020 8:57 AM

Matt Carpenter struggled last season, failing to produce when he wasn't sidelined due to injury for the St. Louis Cardinals.

"I certainly was candid with our front office and our coaching staff at the end of the year," Carpenter said. "I just wanted to apologize. I felt like I'd let them down. I was really hard on myself the way that I played. I was hopeful that they still had faith in me. We had some real good conversations."

He hit a career-high 36 home runs in 2018, making him a National League MVP candidate. Carpenter signed a two-year, $39 million deal last April 19 that included a no-trade clause.

"I think and know he wants to bounce back. He's always been a really hard worker," owner Bill DeWitt said. "I know he wants to get back to where he was the year before, which was pretty elite."

Harrison Bader Ready To Start In Center For Cardinals

Jan 20, 2020 2:24 PM

Harrison Bader is confident he'll be the starting center fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals this season.

"I'm the starting center fielder," the 25-year-old said. "It's my position. I'm going to take it. There's no sense in talking about it. I'm looking forward to showing up day one, guns blazing and ready to go."

Bader has been great defensively and brings speed in center, but his bat has been unreliable.

He hit .205/.314/.366 with 12 home runs and 39 RBI in 347 at-bats in 2019.

"Last year, individually it wasn't what I wanted it to be production-wise," Bader said. "The biggest thing I've taken away at this point is how I responded. I've been very fortunate to be with people behind the scenes who've helped me take steps in the right direction to help me produce like I want to and how I know I can.

"There's no secret to it. There's no special sauce. This is a day-in and day-out grind. My swing is feeling really good. All you can do is go out there and play hard. That's what I've been doing."

Josh Reddick: Astros Need To 'Focus On Winning'

Jan 17, 2020 8:33 AM

Josh Reddick has become the first veteran to discuss the firings of president of baseball operations Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch in the wake of the Houston Astros' sign-stealing scandal.

While appearing at the Astros' annual Caravan fan outreach tour, Reddick said "it just stinks" that Hinch and Luhnow were out of jobs.

Reddick wouldn't discuss much, but he did state what Houston's focus should be going forward.

"We've got to keep our focus on winning," he said. "It's as simple as that. We keep our focus on winning and everything will work itself out."

No Evidence Astros Used Wearable Devices To Steal Signs

Jan 17, 2020 8:28 AM

Major League Baseball investigated concerns and doesn't believe the Houston Astros used wearable, concealed devices to aid in their sign-stealing methods.

An MLB official said the inquiry into wearable devices included the 2019 season.

Concerns were raised after replays of Jose Altuve's walk-off home run in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees showed the infielder grabbing his jersey to avoid it being torn off or ripped open by teammates as he crossed home plate.

In response to speculation that he did not want his jersey removed because he was wearing an electronic device, Altuve released a statement through his agent, Scott Boras.

"I have never worn an electronic device in my performance as a major league player," the statement read.
