The Minnesota Twins have announced that Derek Falvey will return as President of Baseball Operations next season.
"We think we have a very dynamic, smart, forward-thinking leader, and he'll be back in 2023, and I'm hoping many, many years after that," team president Dave St. Peter said.
The Twins have a 52% winning percentage since Falvey took over as the head of baseball operations after the 2016 season.
Sean Doolittle plans to continue his pitching career next season.
Doolittle, who will be a free agent this offseason, expressed a desire to return to the Washington Nationals.
"I really would like a do-over," said Doolitte, who only appeared in six games in 2022 before being shut down with an elbow sprain that would lead him to undergo an internal brace procedure in July.
"I realize that there's a lot that I have to do on my end to even have that be a possibility. But hopefully January or ahead of camp in February, I can show them that I'm healthy and come in and compete for a spot."
The use of pitch clocks cut the average time of Minor League games by 25 minutes this year.
Major League Baseball hopes the time reduction is replicated when the devices are installed next season.
The average time of minor league games dropped to 2 hours, 38 minutes, down from 3:03 during the 2021 season.
Clocks at Triple-A were set at 14 seconds with no runners on base and 19 with runners. At lower levels, the clocks were at 18 seconds with runners.
The Toronto Blue Jays clinched a postseason berth Thursday without taking the field.
Toronto was assured of an American League wild-card berth when the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3.
If Toronto holds its current position as the first of the AL's three wild cards, the Blue Jays would open a best-of-three wild-card series at Rogers Centre next week.
The New York Mets are calling up top prospect Francisco Alvarez for this weekend's pivotal three-game series against the Atlanta Braves, according to multiple reports Thursday.
Alvarez, a 20-year-old catcher, was ranked as the No. 4 overall prospect in ESPN's midseason list published in August.
Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano delivered Wednesday night's historic baseball to Aaron Judge.
Judge's 61st home run ball landed in the home team's bullpen at Rogers Centre. Bullpen coach Matt Buschmann was the one to catch the ball that tied Judge with Roger Maris for the American League and New York Yankees single-season home run record, but amid the commotion Romano stepped up to give the ball to Zack Britton, who approached the bullpen to retrieve the ball.
"Anyone would have done it," Romano said. "We just didn't want to give it to the wrong person. I'm sure it would have gotten in the right hands. But when it came in, there were probably 15 people back there and they wanted the ball. So when Britton came over, we made sure to give it to him."
Judge made sure to show his appreciation.
"Class-act move from [Romano], one of the best in the game," Judge said. "Definitely means a lot. I've got to try to find him here and thank him for that, that's for sure."
The Colorado Rockies placed Charlie Blackmon on the injured list Wednesday with a torn meniscus in his left knee.
The injury happened last week as Blackmon rounded a bag at Coors Field and he tried to play through it.
The outfielder is set to undergo surgery on Monday in Denver and should be healthy for Spring Training.
Freddie Freeman hit an RBI single in the 10th inning to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 1-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night.
The win gave the Dodgers their franchise-record 107th victory.
"That's a lot of wins, if you really think about it," Freeman said. "A lot of good things have to happen from a lot of guys. Not just 26 guys, but 40 to 45 guys have to contribute to be able to do that.
"If you think about it, it's the pitching. Our pitching has been absolutely phenomenal all season long. They give us a chance. We haven't done really well with runners in scoring position in the last couple of days, and they put up zeroes all day until we got one in."
The Dodgers have already clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the National League playoffs.
Major League Baseball is considering contingency plans for this weekend's series between the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves as Hurricane Ian slams Florida's Gulf Coast.
The hurricane made landfall Wednesday afternoon in Florida, while parts of Georgia are expected to see flooding rains and some coastal surge into Saturday.
With the pivotal three-game series slated to start Friday at Truist Park in Atlanta, the clubs and MLB have discussed several options, including a split doubleheader on Sunday.
The teams have a mutual day off Thursday, but MLB is not considering starting the series a day early. Relocating the games to a neutral site also was not a serious consideration as of Wednesday.
