Miguel Cabrera To Undergo Surgery Tuesday

May 27, 2014 11:24 PM

Miguel Cabrera will undergo surgery in Philadelphia on Tuesday to repair a tear in his groin that limited his effectiveness during the playoffs.

"Those are decisions you have to make sometimes if not it affects your future," Cabrera told ESPN Deportes.

"If not it could hurt your career and that's what I based my decision on. I consulted with the team and made this decision personally so I could keep playing with the team. I tried to (play hurt) to take advantage of the chance we had in the playoffs because with so many good teams you never know when a chance like this will come along. It took me eight or nine years to get back in the playoffs and I wanted to be back there and help the team win."

Cabrera hit .348 with 44 home runs and 137 RBIs this season, but he was bothered for the last couple of months by a number of injuries. He batted .262 with two home runs in 11 postseason games.

Beltran Discusses Health, Decision To Play

Jun 10, 2014 10:44 AM

Carlos Beltran was in the lineup for the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night, just one day after a visit to the hospital following an incredible catch in right field at Fenway Park.

Beltran was diagnosed with a rib contusion after stealing a grand slam from David Ortiz in the second inning of Game 1 on Wednesday night. He left the game and initially didn't have much hope of playing in the second game of the World Series.

"When I left the ballpark [Wednesday] I have very little hope that I was going to be in the lineup with the way that I felt," Beltran said after the Cardinals won Game 2. "When I woke up, I woke up feeling a little better. And I came to the ballpark, talked to the trainer. I was able to get treatment and talk to the doctor, and find a way to try anything I could try just to go out there and feel no pain."

Beltran had an injection of Toradol to "block the pain for five hours or six hours."

Playing in the World Series for the first time as a 36-year-old, Beltran hinted that he wouldn't have played if it had been the regular season -- whether the decision be his or Mike Matheny's.

"Well, you know what, I would say that as a player, I'm always going to come to the ballpark to prepare myself to play the game," he said. "At the end of the day I believe that being in the regular season, that the manager is going to be more cautious and probably give me the day."

Beltran went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game.

Craig 'Felt Good' After Returning To Cardinals

Oct 5, 2014 7:38 PM

Allen Craig returned to the lineup for the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night.

Craig, who hadn't played since Sept. 4 because of a Lisfranc sprain in his left foot, was thrust right back into battle. He hit fourth and served as the designated hitter in Game 1 of the World Series.

"He felt good," Mike Matheny said when asked about how his usual first baseman came out of his first game in nearly seven weeks.

"A little bit different. He's been challenged here to move pretty fast in the rehab process, right towards the end. But I thought he took good at-bats, looked like he was seeing the ball pretty well, and didn't see a lot of apprehension. But he's still going to be guarded a little bit. But everything came out pretty good."

Craig went 1-for-4 with a strikeout on the first game of the World Series.

Farrell Expects Buchholz To Make Game 4 Start

Jun 14, 2014 9:50 AM

Clay Buchholz told the media this week that he has been dealing with some fatigue in his shoulder, but the Boston Red Sox have tabbed him as their Game 4 starter nonetheless.

"Well, everything that he's going through right now is indicating that he will start on Sunday," John Farrel said prior to Game 2 on Thursday afternoon. "There's been nothing that has happened since we spoke yesterday here or with Clay that would indicate otherwise. We fully expect him to go."
