Dodgers Shut Down Kemp For Season

Sep 18, 2014 6:17 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers will not have Matt Kemp for the postseason.

A Sunday morning MRI to Kemp's injured left ankle showed significant swelling and weakening in the bone. It was decided that Kemp could do further damage by playing on it.

"It's like a bad nightmare, injury after injury after injury after injury," Kemp said. "Honestly, I don't know what to say any more except that the season's over with for me and I have to be that cheerleader or that leader on the bench to help those guys through those tough games they're going to play."

Latos Unavailable For Wild Card Game

Sep 16, 2014 3:39 PM

The Cincinnati Reds will not be able to start Mat Latos in Tuesday's Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Latos has a bone chip that's causing pain in his elbow.

The Reds are hoping that with a couple of days of treatment, his elbow might improve enough that Latos could pitch in the division series if Cincinnati advances.

Kemp Once Again Sidelined By Ankle

Oct 31, 2014 5:49 PM

Matt Kemp was a late scratch from Saturday night's game against the Colorado Rockies after feeling discomfort in his left ankle while warming up.

Kemp injured the same ankle July 21 and didn't return until Sept. 16. The Dodgers will open the National League Division Series on Thursday.

The outfielder declined to speak in depth to reporters after the game, just saying, "I'll wake up [Sunday] and see how it feels."

Allen Craig Ruled Out For NLDS

Oct 31, 2014 5:49 PM

If Allen Craig returns to the St. Louis Cardinals in the postseason, they'll have to advance past the division series.

Craig has been ruled out for the NLDS because of an injured left foot.

"Understanding the severity of this injury, as optimistic as we were when it first happened, the reality is we have to take a very conservative approach," general manager John Mozeliak said. "To try to rush him back or push him to get back would put him in peril."

Craig is hitting .315/.373/.457 with 13 home runs and 97 RBIs this season.

Machado Has Torn Ligament, May Avoid Surgery

Sep 16, 2014 12:21 AM

An MRI on Tuesday revealed that Manny Machado has a torn medial patellofemoral ligament.

The news is great for the Baltimore Orioles as Machado could be running in six to eight weeks without surgery.

"The MCL is fine, the ACL is fine," trainer Richie Bancells said. "All those major ligaments are fine. This is a smaller ligament."

Machado was injured during Baltimore's game at Tampa Bay. He was running out a single and stepped awkwardly on the inside of the base. He tumbled to the ground and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher.

Latos Has Been Pitching With Abdominal Strain

Oct 31, 2014 12:37 PM

Mat Latos has been pitching with an abdominal strain for nearly three months.

Latos says he suffered the injury in late June during a game against the Texas Rangers.

"I've been pitching with an abdominal strain since the Texas game," Latos said. "I think it was at the end of June."

Latos told the Cincinnati Enquirer about the injury while discussing recent criticism he received from Cincinnati Reds fans during a game last week against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"I pitched real well all year and I hear nothing but good things," Latos said. "But I pitched against the Pirates and I have a bad start. [With] certain Reds fans, I'm not allowed to have that.

"Let alone, no fan knows that I've been dealing with an injury since the Texas Rangers game -- and I've been pitching with it. So I've been pitching the way I've been pitching, but I've been pitching hurt."

Allen Craig To Undergo X-rays On Injured Foot

Oct 31, 2014 7:22 AM

Allen Craig is expected to undergo X-rays on Thursday, when the St. Louis Cardinals evaluate his injured left foot.

Craig, who has missed the last 18 games, initially was diagnosed with a sprain in his foot.

John Mozeliak insisted that the team has not decided whether Craig will rehab in the fall instructional league or if he will participate in simulated games in St. Louis.

"I hate to focus too much on that because I don't know if he's ever going to be physically ready to do that this year," Mozeliak said. "The way I'm always more comfortable dealing with players is when they're cleared to go do baseball-related activities. He hasn't been cleared for that yet."

Oct 31, 2014 3:41 PM

Matt Harvey could pitch in the Arizona Fall League, according to Sandy Alderson.

Harvey has decided to rehab a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will attempt a throwing program over the next six to eight weeks in hopes of avoiding Tommy John surgery.

The New York Mets have decided the AFL would be a potential place to face actual batters next month.

Machado Carted Off With Gruesome Leg Injury

Sep 18, 2014 4:20 AM

Manny Machado was taken off the field on a stretcher after injuring his left leg running out an infield single on Monday night.

Machado's leg buckled when he reached the first-base bag. Buck Showalter had no immediate update on Machado's injury after the game as the Baltimore Orioles awaited test results. The third baseman will undergo an MRI on Tuesday.

"I'm sure we won't get a full diagnosis until we get an MRI back in Baltimore (on Tuesday)," Showalter said while acknowledging that "it certainly doesn't look very promising right now."

The Minnesota Twins have shut down Joe Mauer in the wake of a concussion suffered on Aug. 19.

Mauer had been making progress recently and insisted that he wanted to return to the field before the season ended. However, Terry Ryan said Monday that with just a week left in the season it simply doesn't make sense to back Mauer back.
