Giants' Sandoval Remains On Active Roster

Oct 5, 2014 9:59 PM

The San Francisco Giants must believe that Pablo Sandoval's right elbow has improved enough for him to play because he remains on the team's 25-man roster.

"Pablo's OK," Giants vice president and assistant general manager Bobby Evans said.

Sandoval stretched and played catch with teammates before Saturday's game. Bruce Bochy hoped to get Sandoval an at-bat late in the game but didn't find a proper situation.

Johan Santana To Have Season-Ending Surgery

Sep 18, 2014 5:15 AM

Johan Santana will have season-ending surgery on his left shoulder to repair a torn anterior capsule.

Team doctor David Altchek, who performed Santana's first anterior capsule surgery on Sept. 2, 2010, will again perform the surgery.

The Mets are responsible for $31 million owed to Santana this season, including a 2014 buyout.

"I've known Johan long enough to know that I don't think that he would want to go out like that," David Wright said. "So he's going to probably work just as hard, or if it's possible work harder, to come back from this. I wouldn't be surprised if I see him pitch again."

Mets Deny Santana's No-Hitter Led To Injury

Sep 18, 2014 8:38 PM

The Mets are trying to end speculation that Johan Santana's latest shoulder injury can be traced to his 134-pitch no-hitter last June.

New York general manager Sandy Alderson told Mike Lupica on ESPN New York 98.7 FM there is "little to suggest it had to do with the no-hitter. He continued to pitch. He was symptom-free for a period of time thereafter."

Santana, who missed 2011 because of shoulder surgery, re-tore the anterior capsule in his pitching shoulder this spring.

The left-hander won three of his next five starts after the no-hitter, then lost his final five starts. His season ended in mid-August. He had an 8.27 ERA over the 10 starts after the no-no before landing on the disabled list.

Johan Santana Likely Headed For Shoulder Surgery

Oct 5, 2014 9:58 PM

Johan Santana has suffered a probable re-tear of the anterior capsule in his left shoulder and a repeat surgery is a "strong possibility."

Santana needed 19 months to throw a Major League pitch after the first procedure, which had been performed on fewer than a dozen pitchers in major league history.

He is in the final guaranteed season of a six-year, $137.5 million deal with the Mets.

Halladay Feels Good Coming Out Of Spring Training

Sep 16, 2014 3:26 PM

Roy Halladay allowed two runs over 4 1-3 innings in his first appearance in 11 days, preparing for the regular season in the Phillies' 7-2 win over the Blue Jays on Thursday.

Halladay had not pitched in a major league game since March 17, when he came out of a start against Baltimore after one inning due to a stomach virus.

"Physically this is as good as I've felt coming out of spring training in probably five years as far as total body," Halladay said. "Stuff-wise, I think location and movement I'm just a click behind where I want to be."

MLB Not Ready For Padded Cap Lining

Oct 31, 2014 10:28 AM

When pitcher Brandon McCarthy suffered life-threatening brain injuries after he was struck in the head by a line drive last September, MLB said it accelerated efforts to come up with acceptable protective headgear for pitchers.

But with the season just four days away, MLB senior VP Dan Halem acknowledged to "Outside the Lines" on Wednesday that no safety device will be approved in time for Opening Day.

"If I had a product that passed [high-speed impact] tests, it'd be out there tomorrow," Halem said.

Wright Returns As DH In Minor League Game

Jun 19, 2014 10:19 AM

David Wright played in a game Tuesday for the first time since his five-RBI performance against Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic on March 12.

Wright, shuttling between Double-A and Triple-A games against Cardinals farmhands, went 1-for-5 with a single as a designated hitter.

He had received a cortisone injection in his left side on March 15 to treat a strained intercostal muscle.

"It felt OK," Wright said. "I haven't played since a couple of weeks ago. I felt like the timing was OK, better towards the fifth at-bat. But it was good to get that number of ABs that quickly. It felt as comfortable as, I guess, I could taking the two weeks off. ... I finally got on base the fifth at-bat, so I was able to stretch the legs out a little bit. So it felt good."
