Police say a suspected drug trafficker offered to pay $30,000 for the shooting that wounded baseball slugger David Ortiz, who was sitting alongside the intended victim.

National Police spokesman Frank Felix Duran Mejia told a news conference on Sunday that the alleged mastermind of the attack had so far paid only $10,000 to people hired to arrange the killing of Sixto David Fernandez, his cousin.

Cubs pitcher Pedro Strop and Reds outfielder Yasiel Puig had words with each other as the benches cleared in the Cubs' 6-0 win on Saturday.

Puig got hit in the hip by a 3-0 pitch from Strop in the bottom of the eighth inning and began to walk toward the mound while screaming at the pitcher. Cubs catcher Willson Contreras and first baseman Anthony Rizzo held Puig back while Puig and Strop kept yelling at each other. Things eventually calmed down, and after the game, Strop didn't understand why Puig was so upset.

"He just reacted like that," Strop said. "Maybe because it was a 3-0 pitch, maybe it looks weird. I wasn't commanding my sinker, and I didn't want to leave a cookie 3-0. He'll swing 3-0 and hit it way out of the park. He just acted stupid."

The Detroit Tigers signed former St. Louis Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal to a minor league deal after he threw a bullpen session Saturday at Comerica Park.

The veteran right-hander pitched in 12 games this season with the Washington Nationals, posting a 22.74 ERA.

When Giants CEO and president Larry Baer rejoins the team Tuesday, he will report to the man who filled his role while he was suspended.

On Saturday, the Giants acknowledged Baer's pending return and announced that Rob Dean, the son-in-law of late Giants principal owners Harmon and Sue Burns, would continue as the MLB control person and be Baer's boss.

"Rob will transition into the role of chairman and will continue as the MLB designated control person," the team said in a statement. "In this capacity, Rob -- along with Larry -- will represent the club with MLB. Rob will also, on behalf of ownership, collaborate with the executive leadership team on major organizational issues. Keeping in line with industry standards, the president of baseball operations reports to the control person, and we will adopt that practice."

Apparently, there was only one way the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox felt they could introduce baseball to the United Kingdom: with runs -- plenty of them.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it's the first time in the history of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry that both teams have scored six runs in the first inning of a series game.

Nearly five hours later, when it was all over, the Yankees had held on for a 17-13 victory in a game that featured 30 hits and no errors.

Major League Baseball has scrapped plans to open its 2020 season in Asia and hopes to play more games in Europe.

MLB started its season in Tokyo for the fifth time in 2019, and its labor contract with the players' association called for a 2020 opener in Asia.

"We just decided it probably wasn't the right time to try to do it," Manfred said Saturday.
