Matthews Jr. Signs Minors Deal With Reds

Oct 1, 2014 9:09 PM

The Reds signed outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. to a minor-league contract on Thursday. Matthews was assigned to Triple-A Louisville a little more than a week after being released by the Mets. "We're going to give him an opportunity to play every day in center field in Louisville," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. "That's where he feels comfortable. He hasn't played a lot in a while. The more he plays the better he plays. "We'll see if he can get back to where he was and help the Major League club down the line."

He was MVP of the 2006 NL championship series while with the Cardinals and also was a member of the rotation that got swept by the Red Sox in the 2004 World Series.
