Edwin Diaz Throws Outdoors, Hopes To Pitch For Mets In 2023

Aug 29, 2023 8:01 AM

Edwin Diaz remains hopeful he can return to the mound for the New York Mets this season.

The reliever threw his first outdoor bullpen session following knee surgery. He tore his right patellar tendon on March 15 while celebrating after getting the final out of Puerto Rico's win over the Dominican Republic at the World Baseball Classic. The projected timeline for a return was six to eight months.

"My goal was to be ready in six months," Diaz said. "And I'm working on that."

Diaz said he was clocked in the low to mid-90s on Sunday, when he threw on an outdoor bullpen mound to a catcher in the crouching position for the first time since getting hurt.

"I know my stuff is there," Diaz said. "A main thing for me is how my knee is good and healthy. I feel healthy right now, and I'm pitching again. I just want to get that positive note to go home and relax, work hard for next year."

Tony Gonsolin Won't Return To Dodgers This Season

Aug 28, 2023 7:49 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers have shifted Tony Gonsolin to the 60-day injured list, officially ending his season.

Gonsolin was placed on the 15-day IL on August 19 due to right forearm inflammation. At the time, Dave Roberts admitted that Gonsolin probably wouldn't pitch again.

The exact nature of Gonsolin's injury isn't quite known, and Roberts Sunday told the Orange County Register's Bill Plunkett and other reporters that the right-hander had undergone an MRI.

After being named a National League All-Star in 2022 and posting a 2.14 ERA over 24 starts, Gonsolin has struggled this season. He'll end with a 4.98 ERA over 20 starts.

All-Star reliever Félix Bautista was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday by the Baltimore Orioles, who can only hope his ailing elbow won't keep him sidelined for the rest of the season.

"Early indications are he has some degree of injury to the ulnar collateral ligament," Orioles general manager Mike Elias said. "We have not firmed down any timetable or anything of that nature."

Aug 26, 2023 8:19 PM

Shohei Ohtani declined imaging after he left an Aug. 3 start against Seattle after four innings and 59 pitches because of cramping in his pitching hand and fingers, Los Angeles Angels general manager Perry Minasian said Saturday.

Ohtani returned to the mound six days later and beat San Francisco, throwing 97 pitches over six innings while allowing only an unearned run. He then skipped a turn, citing fatigue.

Mike Trout Lands Back On IL With Sore Left Hand

Aug 24, 2023 8:26 AM

Mike Trout is headed back to the injured list with a sore left hand.

The Los Angeles Angels reinstated Trout from the IL on Tuesday after missing 38 games with a hamate fracture in his left hand.

Trout suffered the injury on July 3 and had the hook of his left hamate bone removed on July 5.

"He tried to swing yesterday, and it didn't go so well," Perry Minasian said. "We're gonna put him back on the IL and give him some rest and see where that goes."

Trout, a three-time American League MVP and 11-time All-Star, is hitting .263/.367/.490 with 18 homers and 44 RBIs in 82 games this season.
