Bryce Harper To Report To Phillies In Two Weeks

Feb 24, 2023 8:55 AM

Bryce Harper is a few weeks away from reporting to the Philadelphia Phillies as he recovers from offseason elbow surgery.

Dave Dombrowski said Thursday that Harper is taking swings with a bat at home in Las Vegas and will report March 8 or 9.

Harper had surgery on his right elbow in November. The Phillies said then that Harper was expected to return in a designated hitter role by the All-Star break and could play right field by season's end.

"He's doing great from the recovery perspective," Dombrowski said. "In his progress, doctors are happy where he is."

Jacob deGrom Throws, Takes 'Step In The Right Direction'

Feb 24, 2023 8:51 AM

Jacob deGrom threw just over 20 pitches on Thursday morning, about a week after suffering tightness in his left side.

"It's a small step," he said later, "but a step in the right direction."

The Texas Rangers signed deGrom, 34, to a five-year, $185 million contract this offseason. He won back-to-back Cy Young awards with the New York Mets in 2018 and 2019, but has thrown just 156 1/3 innings over the past two seasons.

deGrom missed the second half of the 2021 season with inflammation in his right elbow, then missed the first four months of the 2022 season with a stress reaction in his right scapula.

Frankie Montas Has Surgery; Yankees Hope For Second-Half Return

Feb 23, 2023 9:13 AM

Frankie Montas won't throw a baseball until at least late May after undergoing right shoulder surgery.

The timetable could allow him to pitch for the New York Yankees in the second half of the season.

Aaron Boone said the labrum of the right-hander was cleaned up during the procedure Tuesday and Montas' rotator cuff did not need to be repaired. Montas won't throw for 12 weeks.

"Everything went according to plan," Boone said. "We're day one out of surgery, so we have a long way to go from there. We're hopeful at some point he can get back but I don't want to best case, worst case."

The Yankees acquired Montas from the Oakland Athletics on Aug. 1. He posted a 6.35 ERA in eight starts and didn't start after Sept. 16 due to inflammation in his pitching shoulder.

Astros' Lance McCullers, Jr. Won't Be Ready To Start Season

Feb 23, 2023 9:09 AM

Lance McCullers, Jr. won't be ready for Opening Day with the Houston Astros because of a strained muscle in his pitching arm.

The right-hander noticed soreness after a bullpen session last week.

McCullers was sidelined for the first 4 1/2 months of last season while rehabbing from a right flexor pronator strain.

"I've been a little bit upset," he said. "I was really looking forward to a great start to the camp and a great start to the season."

McCullers, 29, described the injury as a "small muscle strain."

"It will set me back a little bit, but it shouldn't be anything like last year," he said. "It should be something where hopefully I'm playing catch in a couple weeks."

Nestor Cortes To Miss WBC With Hamstring Injury

Feb 14, 2023 7:39 AM

Nestor Cortes will miss next month's World Baseball Classic because of a strained right hamstring.

The New York Yankees left-hander hasn't ruled out being ready for the start of the regular season.

Kyle Freeland will replace Cortes on the United States roster.

"Came in on Wednesday and told the staff I was a little banged up," Cortes said. "After long talks, obviously, the best interest was to stay out of it. The biggest goal right here is to get healthy and be ready for the start of the season. I think it's something that's definitely doable to start the season off healthy and in the rotation."
