Shohei Ohtani Will Have Tommy John Next Week

Sep 26, 2018 7:49 AM

Shohei Ohtani has decided to undergo Tommy John surgery and will have the procedure next week.

Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the procedure in Los Angeles.

"I think it was the proper decision Shohei made to have surgery, and the sooner the better," Mike Scioscia said.

The Angels announced Sept. 5 that an MRI showed Ohtani had new damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow and that Tommy John surgery was the recommended course of action.

The 24-year-old maintained he would be able to return next season as a DH, even though he might not be able to throw again until 2020.

"It obviously puts him out of pitching in 2019, but he'll be able to hit, and I think he's at peace with that," Scioscia said. "He wants to excel at both phases of the game. The fact he can't pitch (next season), there is a little bit of a void. But he'll be able to hit and focus on that."

Didi Gregorius Has Torn Cartilage In Wrist

Sep 24, 2018 8:01 AM

The New York Yankees could be without Didi Gregorius for the remainder of the season because of torn cartilage in his right wrist.

Gregorius suffered the injury while sliding headfirst into home to help the Yankees earn a walk-off, playoff-clinching win Saturday night.

An MRI on Sunday morning revealed a small tear in the cartilage. A cortisone shot was administered following the test, which the infielder said made him feel a lot better.

"I have some movement in there," Gregorius said. "They say things like this happens to other players, but some of them play through it. So we're going to see day-to-day how it goes, and if I feel better, I'll be back in there so we can still make the playoff decision."

Mets Shut Down Zack Wheeler As Precaution

Sep 20, 2018 8:08 AM

The New York Mets are shutting down Zack Wheeler for the rest of the season as a precaution.

Wheeler has logged nearly 100 more innings than he did last season.

Mickey Callaway said Wednesday that they'd be "probably taking the best care of him" by holding him out of his final two starts.

"I feel like I had a good season," Wheeler said. "I would have liked to have finished it out, but getting 100 more innings than last season without doing that much the past 2 1/2 years, I think it makes sense to kind of shut it down and not really push it."

Wheeler missed two full seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2015. He returned last season and was 3-7 with a 5.21 ERA in 17 starts. After beginning this season in Triple-A following a difficult spring training, Wheeler was called up in April and went 12-7 with a 3.31 ERA in 29 starts while throwing 182 1/3 innings.

Brandon Morrow Won't Pitch Again This Season

Sep 19, 2018 7:57 AM

The Chicago Cubs have shut down closer Brandon Morrow for the rest of the season as he recovers from a bone bruise in his pitching arm.

The Cubs have officially ruled Morrow out because the injury won't allow him to return in time for the end of the regular season or the playoffs.

"We knew we were running out of time to begin with," Morrow said. "Just the nature of the injury and the amount of time that it takes to clear out."

The right-hander has been out since the All-Star break.

"Any time the plan is to pitch through discomfort, that's not a great long-term formula, but we let him go as long as he was honest about it with us," Theo Epstein said. "He was."

Cubs Shut Down Drew Smyly For Season

Sep 11, 2018 8:39 AM

The Chicago Cubs have shut down Drew Smyly for the rest of the season.

Smyly is still recovering from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in June 2017.

He was throwing simulated games against Cubs hitters in July and hoped to go on a rehab assignment in the minors by Aug. 1.

"We felt it was more important to end his season to get him the right amount of rest moving forward, so we took it out of his hands," Theo Epstein said. "He felt strongly about wanting to push through and contribute."

Smyly was signed to a two-year, $10 million deal in the offseason with the expectation that he would be fully recovered in 2019.

Aaron Judge Takes BP, But Wrist Pain Lingers

Sep 11, 2018 8:36 AM

Aaron Judge took batting practice on Monday as he continues to make strides in his recovery from a chip fracture in his right wrist.

Judge is still experiencing pain in the wrist. He hasn't faced live pitching since suffering the injury on July 26 against the Kansas City Royals.

"Kind of a typical Aaron Judge BP, putting on a show," Aaron Boone said. "It went really well."

The New York Yankees still don't have a firm timetable for when Judge will return.
