Aaron Judge Hopes To Return Before Wrist Fully Heals

Aug 29, 2018 8:33 AM

Aaron Judge said Tuesday that he may return to the New York Yankees before the chip fracture in his right wrist fully heals.

"That's what I've heard is you can play with it, because I don't need surgery, I don't need anything like that," Judge said. "I can play with it before it actually fully heals. It's just getting that pain down to zero."

Judge has been sidelined since being hit by a pitch on July 26. New York's medical staff wants the right fielder to be able to test the wrist's range of motion without it bothering him.

The wrist remains both sensitive to the touch and painful when he tries to test its flexibility.

"The pain's going down. If it was a five [on a scale] two weeks ago, it's going down to a four," Judge said. "It's just kind of working its way down. We're just trying to get to zero so we can move forward.

"I'll wake up one of these days and feel good. Just waiting for that day."

Shohei Ohtani Thinks He Can Pitch Again This Season

Aug 28, 2018 7:42 AM

Shohei Ohtani believes he can pitch again for the Los Angeles Angels this season.

Ohtani threw 50 pitches in three innings at Angel Stadium on Monday as he makes a gradual comeback from a sprained elbow ligament.

The right-hander hasn't pitched in a game since June 6 but would like to get back on the mound during the Angels' final 30 games.

Ohtani will throw a bullpen session later in the week before the Angels determine his next step, according to Mike Scioscia.

The Angels are 17.5 games back in the American League West.

Aaron Judge Improving, Still Not Swinging

Aug 28, 2018 7:33 AM

Aaron Judge participated in baserunning and fielding drills on Monday at Yankee Stadium.

"Just gradually starting to introduce some baseball-type activities," Aaron Boone said. "It feels like, hopefully, he's improving a little bit."

Judge hasn't swung a bat since July 26, the night he suffered a fractured right wrist.

"We just haven't gone to the next level of really starting to swing the bat yet," Boone said. "That's been trending in the right direction but has been something that's moved kind of slow."

The New York Yankees initially felt he'd miss three weeks.

"He's not throwing the ball [at] full intensity because I think that's along the lines of really starting to hit," Boone said. "When you're cutting it loose there, that's the motion of that, you're going to feel that."

Buster Posey Out 6-8 Months With Hip Surgery

Aug 25, 2018 6:34 PM

Buster Posey will undergo season-ending hip surgery and could be out six to eight months.

"It's something that needs to be taken care of," Bruce Bochy said Saturday. "It's the wear and tear of playing the game that's caught up with him a little bit. When we get this thing rehabbed, I know Buster's going to be happy to have this behind him."

Posey has dealt with the injury all season.

Posey will visit Dr. Marc J. Philippon, in Vail, Colorado, for the procedure to repair his labrum and to remove a bone spur in his right hip. The recovery timeline could cause him to miss part, if not all, of spring training, but Posey was optimistic.

"If things go smoothly with no hiccups, I'll be ready to go next Opening Day," Posey told reporters Friday.

Aroldis Chapman Out Two Weeks After PRP Injection

Aug 25, 2018 9:28 AM

Aroldis Chapman had a plasma-rich platelet injection in his knee Friday and the New York Yankees will re-evaluate him in two weeks.

Chapman has been bothered by a knee injury for much of the season.

Aaron Boone said it's possible that Chapman will resume playing catch and slowly returning to baseball activities next week.

"We're optimistic he'll return in an impactful way this season at some point," Boone said. "Hopefully this little timeout is something that can help freshen him up and get him back rolling for us before the end of the season."

Yu Darvish Relieved By Elbow Diagnosis

Aug 25, 2018 6:34 PM

Yu Darvish was relieved to receive the elbow diagnosis he did earlier this week as he was questioning what was wrong with him.

The Chicago Cubs shut Darvish down for the season with a stress reaction (bone bruise) in his right elbow.

"Until the diagnosis, there was some time I thought it could be my mental side because there was an unknown factor," Darvish said through his interpreter. "With the diagnosis, I'm relieved to know what that something was."

The injury had been left undiagnosed from late May until a few days ago and the right-hander was aware of the criticism he was receiving.

"A person can't really tell how much an injury hurts because you're not that person," Darvish said. "It's natural for me to receive those kinds of comments towards me because they don't really understand where the pain is and how much the pain is."

Yu Darvish Done For Season With Stress Reaction In Elbow

Aug 22, 2018 8:11 AM

Yu Darvish has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right elbow and will miss the remainder of the season, the Chicago Cubs have announced.

Darvish will need a minimum of six weeks to recover, which wouldn't allow him enough time to return in 2018.

An MRI revealed the injury in addition to some lingering triceps inflammation. The tests also revealed Darvish's ligaments to be in stable condition.

Aroldis Chapman Leaves With Knee Pain After Six Pitches

Aug 22, 2018 7:56 AM

Aroldis Chapman departed Tuesday night's game after just six pitches because of pain in his left knee.

Chapman has pitched through knee pain for much of the season with the New York Yankees.

"Same spot as he felt before, so we just got him out of there," Aaron Boone said. "We'll get all the testing and stuff done [on Wednesday]."

Chapman said he felt some discomfort in the knee while warming up, but the pain worsened while he was in the game, prompting him to call for the trainers.

"[The pain] was more than usual," Chapman said through his interpreter. "That's why I decided to call the trainers out. It's more than what I encountered lately."

Buster Posey Might Have Season-Ending Surgery

Aug 22, 2018 7:50 AM

Buster Posey is considering surgery to fix a hip problem that has been hobbling him all year.

The San Francisco Giants catcher recently got a cortisone injection and missed last month's All-Star Game.

"I think when you're dealing with an injury, it can be a level of frustration," Posey said. "I'm so hesitant just because ... I hate reading stuff where I feel like people are talking and there's any sort of excuse, no matter what it is.

"But yeah, I mean, just where we are in the standings, too, I think that makes it difficult."

Posey sat out Tuesday's game after catching all 13 innings in Monday's contest.

There is no deadline for Posey to decide on the surgery, but doing so would sideline him until the 2019 season.
