Joe Panik will fly to Los Angeles to see a hand specialist for a second opinion on his sprained left thumb ligament.
“There’s a good chance he’s headed toward surgery,” manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday.
The injury occurred Friday night when Panik’s glove met Yasiel Puig’s left leg on a pickoff play at second base.
Typical recovery time for this surgery is six to eight weeks.
Diamondbacks pitcher Robbie Ray left Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Nationals in the second inning because of a strained right oblique.
After throwing a pitch to Washington's Matt Wieters, Ray called the trainer from the dugout and began motioning toward his right side. He exited the game after a brief conversation with the trainer and manager Torey Lovullo.
"I felt great up until that one pitch," Ray said. "I was probably in the middle of my delivery, I was letting go of the ball and just felt my side grab, and I wasn't able to finish the pitch and left it up and away. I just wasn't able to get anything on it."
Lovullo said Ray will undergo an MRI on Monday.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Sunday that Shohei Ohtani won't make his scheduled start against the Orioles on Tuesday night while he recovers from a mild left ankle sprain suffered Friday.
Ohtani could face the Orioles on Wednesday or Thursday, Scioscia said.
The Los Angeles Dodgers placed right fielder Yasiel Puig on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with a left hip pointer and bruised foot after getting hurt in the field and the plate a day earlier.
The Cubs will welcome back a pair of regulars on Saturday, with Kris Bryant and Ben Zobrist returning to the lineup against the Brewers.
Bryant has missed four games after being hit in the head by a pitch from the Rockies' German Marquez last Sunday.
Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani left Friday night's home game against the Yankees with a mild left ankle sprain and is day-to-day.
Ohtani was the designated hitter and had homered in his first at-bat, his fourth of the season, in the second inning.
Ohtani grounded out to second in the fifth inning, then was pinch hit for by Luis Valbuena in the seventh inning, when the Angels announced the injury.
The sprain puts in jeopardy Ohtani's availability for Saturday's game against New York.
White Sox reliever Danny Farquhar was in stable but critical condition Sunday, a day after undergoing surgery to relieve swelling on his brain after suffering a brain hemorrhage while in the dugout during a game.
White Sox vice president Ken Williams told USA Today Sports that Farquhar remained Sunday in the neurosurgical ICU unit at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and was being closely monitored by neurosurgeons after undergoing a complicated procedure Saturday night.
The St. Louis Cardinals placed Adam Wainwright on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with inflammation in his right elbow.
Right-hander John Brebbia was recalled from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move. Wainwright's placement on the DL was made retroactive to April 20.
Shohei Ohtani is scheduled to throw a "full gorilla" bullpen session on Sunday that will give the Angels a better idea if the blister that forced the Japanese two-way sensation out of his last pitching start has healed.
"He's feeling much better, so we're encouraged," manager Mike Scioscia said Saturday, before Angels played the Giants.
Scioscia said he'll wait until after Sunday afternoon's game to confirm when Ohtani's next pitching start will be.
