Jeter Set To Rejoin Yankees On Monday
Derek Jeter is set to rejoin the Yankees on Monday in his return from a calf injury, according to an Associated Press report.
The shortstop said Thursday he will play minor league rehab games Saturday and Sunday at Double-A Trenton and be with the Yankees for a series in Cleveland.
“I feel good now,” Jeter said after working out at the Yankees’ minor league complex. “I feel a lot better. I’m ready to get out of here.”
Santana Close To Throwing Off Mound
Mets left-hander Santana continues to long toss and is close to throwing off a mound for the second time in his rehab, according to the team's general manager.
Santana, who is attempting to recover from last September's surgery to repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder, ceased throwing off a mound earlier this month after experiencing discomfort in his arm.
"Everything's been good so far, but he hasn't pushed it," general manager John Ricco said. "That would be getting up on the mound and letting it go. He hasn't gone there yet. And a lot of that is really based on how he feels."
The Mets have yet to set an updated timetable for Santana's return.
Hughes Declares Himself Ready To Return
Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes has declared himself ready to return to the team's rotation.
"Absolutely, if they asked me," Hughes said after throwing 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball during an 88-pitch rehab start for the Trenton Thunder on Wednesday afternoon. "But I know they won't. I don't make those decisions."
Hughes allowed just three hits, walked two and struck out eight -- all via swinging strikes.
"My last two outings stuff wise have been good," Hughes said. "Command wise I didn't necessarily think about what the radar gun said every pitch. I knew my stuff's been good the last month or so. I've just gotta make sure the location's there, and that's the other key, I think."
Josh Johnson's Season In Jeopardy
Marlins starter Josh Johnson will see Dr. James Andrews to have his injured right shoulder examined after feeling stiffness following a bullpen session.
"Not great," said Larry Beinfest, Florida's president of baseball operations. "He threw a [bullpen session] on Friday and reported a little bit more stiffness and just didn't feel right. Obviously it's not what we were looking for in the progression."
The Marlins placed Johnson on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder in mid-May. They later transferred him to the 60-day DL and targeted a mid-July return to the mound.
"That was the thought even with the 60-day because we wanted to make sure we made every step and didn't cut any corners to make sure he was right, but he just wasn't ready to push through that right now," Beinfest said.
Johnson resumed throwing June 17 as he began to work his way back from the injury. His last throwing session was Friday.
"He had been feeling well and was right on the throwing progression to come back that first week after the All-Star break," Beinfest said. "That's obviously in jeopardy now."
Bryce Harper Out With Bone Bruise
Nationals prospect Bryce Harper has not played the last three days in Class A Hagerstown with a bone bruise by his left thumb.
Harper was jammed by a pitch in mid-June and has felt intermittent pain in his hand ever since.
The damage is not structural, according to general manager Mike Rizzo.
"He's playable," Rizzo said. "If it was Ryan Zimmerman, he would be playing. He would be playing if he was a big leaguer. But there's no need for him to be playing uncomfortable."
Dodgers Shut Down Broxton Again
Dodgers reliever Jonathan Broxton has been shut down from throwing again for at least another three weeks after suffering a setback with his right elbow.
The setback came just as the right-hander was set to come off the disabled list.
As a result, club officials won't say at this point that they are counting on getting Broxton back the rest of the season.
"We don't have a timetable now," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "We did this once before, where he was shut down for three weeks and did all the stuff to return, and then we got back here. It's just hard to say now that we're going to get him back in six weeks or seven weeks or eight weeks. To me, at this point, if we get him back, great, all the better. But we have to kind of move forward."
Colon To See Doctor, May Return This Weekend
Yankees starter Bartolo Colon may be ready to return and pitch against the Mets this weekend at Citi Field.
Colon, who has been sidelined since June 12 with a strained left hamstring, threw 60 pitches in a simulated game on Monday.
"The concern for me is not his arm, it's to make sure his leg is healed, and that we'll check out," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
Colon will be in New York on Wednesday to have his leg evaluated by team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad.
"There's always a little bit of a concern," Girardi said. "But he hurt it covering first base, so if he's healthy, we feel that he's ready to go, there's a chance that he's going to pitch."
Jeter Runs Bases, 'Feels Good'
Injured Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter ran the bases on Tuesday, one day before he's eligible to come off the disabled list.
New York general manager Brian Cashman admitted on Monday that Jeter won't come off the DL immediately upon his eligibility.
He is recovering from a strained right calf.
The Yankees captain ran from home to first four times, first to second three times and first to third once at the team's minor league complex.
"Running is probably most important," Jeter said. "Feels good. I'm sure we'll pick it up in the next couple days."
Phillies Lose Another Closer To DL
The Phillies have placed yet another closer on the disabled list.
Right-hander Ryan Madson was placed on the DL Tuesday with a right hand contusion. The move was made retroactive to June 19.
Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel has said he'll divide the closer duties between Michael Stutes and Antonio Bastardo, depending on the situation.
Earlier this season, the Phillies placed past closers Brad Lidge and Jose Contreras on the DL.
Jeter Won't Come Off DL Wednesday
Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will not come off the disabled list on Wednesday when he is eligible to do so.
The development puts his status for this weekend's Subway Series at Citi Field in doubt.
Jeter, on the disabled list with a strained right calf, took batting practice, grounders and ran on Monday at the Yankees' complex in Tampa.
"Absolutely," general manager Brian Cashman said when asked if the Yankees were being cautious with Jeter. "That's the route we've taken so far and it's the right one. It's certainly going to be longer than we hoped.
"It's going to take as long as it takes. We just don't want it to take any longer than it needs to take."
