Kuo To Have Fifth Elbow Surgery

Sep 17, 2014 6:42 PM

Dodgers reliever Hong-Chih Kuo will undergo surgery on his left elbow for the fifth time in his career on Friday, this time an arthroscopic procedure to remove a loose body. The procedure normally is considered a minor one, and Kuo is expected to be at full strength by the start of spring training. "(But) it's never a minor procedure if it is attached to the elbow of Kuo,'' Dodgers medical-services director Stan Conte said. "We don't expect it to be a big deal, but you kind of hold your breath when it's a surgery involving Kuo.''

Lackey To Have Tommy John Surgery

Sep 30, 2014 10:39 PM

Red Sox pitcher John Lackey will have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, new general manager Ben Cherington announced at his introductory news conference Tuesday. "He knows he's a much better pitcher than he showed in 2011," Cherington said. "We look forward to having him as part of the staff, hopefully in 2013." Lackey will miss the 2012 season as he recovers following the surgery. He had the worst season of his career, going 12-12 with a 6.41 ERA in the second year of a five-year, $82.5 million deal.

Jamie Moyer Still Eyeing Comeback In 2012

Oct 7, 2014 8:40 PM

Jamie Moyer still plans to attempt a comeback to the Major Leagues next season, despite the fact that he is coming off major elbow surgery and will be 49 years old. "There will be naysayers, but they've been there my whole career," Moyer said. "I don't let them affect me in a negative way. If anything, I turn it into a positive." The free-agent lefthander is nearly 11 months removed from Tommy John surgery. He has worked his way up to 60 pitches during bullpen sessions and is about to start contacting clubs that might want to watch him throw. "If this were the middle of July, I'd be at the stage where one more good bullpen session and I'd be ready to go out on a [minor-league] rehab assignment," said Moyer, who turns 49 next month. "I've gone through this rehab knowing that my arm and body will stop me if they have to. So far they haven't."

Pujols Was Shaken Up On Play In Fifth

Sep 25, 2014 11:23 AM

Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols was shaken up on a play in the fifth inning on Sunday night. St. Louis advanced to the World Series after beating Milwaukee 12-6 in Game 6 of the NLCS. Pujols fielded a grounder and made a lunging tag of Milwaukee's Ryan Braun, who tried to beat Pujols to the bag by diving into it headfirst. After making the tag, Pujols rolled on the ground in pain. He did not immediately get back up, though he remained in the game. "I know Albert is no drama king, so when he goes down, you know something is hurting, and you fear the worst," manager Tony La Russa said. Pujols had been spiked on his right forearm by Braun. Cardinals reliever Marc Rzepczynski, who was hustling to cover first, stepped on Pujols' right knee while trying to avoid a collision. "It didn't feel too good," Pujols said. "But as long as I can walk, I'm going to stay in the game."

Blue Jays catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud tore ligaments in his thumb catching for Team USA recently. J.P. Arencibia has been holding down the fort, but d'Arnaud is believed to be their catcher of the future. Toronto acquired him from Philadelphia in the Roy Halladay trade. If he misses some time this spring -- including spring training itself, as well as part of the regular season -- his ETA in the big leagues is certain to be pushed back.
