Mets Shut Down Noah Syndergaard, 'Pray' For 2021 Return

May 28, 2021 8:27 AM

Noah Syndergaard has been shut down for six weeks with right elbow inflammation.

"It's big. We were just counting on him being here a month from now," Luis Rojas said. "This happening is tough. ... We pray that he can pitch for us this year."

Rojas said there was no structural damage to Syndergaard's UCL.

On Tuesday, Syndergaard left his second rehab start following his recovery from Tommy John surgery after one inning (16 pitches) as a precautionary measure due to soreness in the elbow. He was scheduled to throw at least four innings for Class A St. Lucie.

Shohei Ohtani Scratched From Start Because Of Traffic Jam

May 28, 2021 8:23 AM

A traffic jam kept Shohei Ohtani from making it to the ballpark in time for his regular pregame pitching routine, and the Los Angeles Angels scratched him from his scheduled start Thursday night against the Oakland Athletics.

He was shifted to designated hitter.

"That kept pushing him back," Joe Maddon said. "For us, Shohei's most comfortable, he's pretty much regimented to get everything going about 4 o'clock for his start. It exceeded that by maybe an hour, so we started calling the audible at that point to not pitch him tonight. And if we're not going to pitch him, we're going to DH him."

Ohtani was in the lineup batting second against the A's and went 0-for-3 with a walk.

Corey Kluber Out At Least 2 Months With Shoulder Injury

May 27, 2021 7:28 AM

The New York Yankees will be without Corey Kluber for at least two months because of a right shoulder injury.

Kluber was pulled after three innings Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. He tossed a no-hitter last week.

An MRI on his ailing shoulder revealed a subscapularis strain, which is expected to keep Kluber from throwing for at least four weeks, followed by at least four weeks of rehabilitation.

Aaron Boone said he doesn't believe the no-hitter caused Kluber's injury. Kluber called the whole situation "frustrating" Tuesday, saying he felt some tightness in the shoulder warming up, but it's unclear what caused the injury.
