La Russa: 'There's Not Going To Be A Closers Controversy'

Aug 4, 2021 1:20 AM

The only thing better than having one All-Star closer is having two. The White Sox acquired their second one on Friday when they traded Nick Madrigal and Codi Heuer to the Cubs for Craig Kimbrel.

Kimbrel joins Liam Hendriks to form a dynamic duo at the back end of games.

"The day that they are both available it will be real clear, if we have the lead, who pitches the eighth and who pitches the ninth," manager Tony La Russa said Saturday. "There's not going to be a QB controversy, there's not going to be a closers controversy. Let's get the outs, let's get the win and keep moving forward."

La Russa intends on informing the pitchers of their roles before the game even starts and is mostly relying on availability as the determining factor from night to night.

"I'll be closing games," Kimbrel said on his first day with his new team. "I'll be throwing in the eighth inning. The whole idea is to structure it in a way that we're all healthy when October gets here."

Tyler Glasnow Expected To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Aug 4, 2021 1:23 AM

Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Tyler Glasnow is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery next week, sources told ESPN, after attempts to rehabilitate a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow left him still in pain.

While there remains a possibility that Dr. Keith Meister, who will examine Glasnow next week, will recommend against the procedure, the likelihood is that the ace of the Rays' pitching staff will miss the remainder of the 2021 season -- and perhaps all of 2022 as well.

Dodgers' Andrew Friedman Willing To Be 'Aggressive' At Deadline

Aug 1, 2021 1:37 AM

Andrew Friedman's reputation as a pragmatic executive is no longer applicable. The Dodgers president of baseball operations is officially a big-game hunter.

The latest move -- plucking Max Scherzer and Trea Turner from the Nationals for a package of four prospects, headlined by catcher Keibert Ruiz and pitcher Josiah Gray -- might have provided the Dodgers with some distance in a tightly contested NL West and made them the favorites to repeat as champions.

"I feel like we had a championship-caliber team before this, with the group of talent we have, with the guys that are coming back from injury," Friedman said Friday. "But whenever you're in position to win a championship and you have impact-type players that you can add -- our mindset is to be aggressive on that and try to balance the today and the tomorrow. And some of the times that we've balanced the future have put us in position to do this."

GM Jed Hoyer: Cubs' Shake-Up 'Right Thing For Organization'

Aug 1, 2021 1:37 AM

An 11-game losing streak sealed the Chicago Cubs' fate in the standings not only for 2021, but also for the future of the franchise well beyond this season.

In a span of 24 hours, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer tore down the team he helped build -- one that won a World Series in 2016. First baseman Anthony Rizzo was traded to the New York Yankees, shortstop Javy Baez to the New York Mets and third baseman/outfielder Kris Bryant to the San Francisco Giants.

All three popular Cubs will be free agents after this season.
