David Ortiz Claims A-Rod, Derek Jeter Upset With Treatment By Yankees

Oct 31, 2017 6:41 PM

David Ortiz claims both Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter have issues with the way they've been treated by the New York Yankees.

“Things didn’t end up the way things should be,” Ortiz told Sports Illustrated of the end of Rodriguez's tenure.

“To be honest with you, there’s a problem between that organization and its players, I believe. I don’t even think Jeter is happy with them, you know what I’m saying?”

Jeter retired in 2014 and recently became a part owner of the Miami Marlins.

“Now you would be like, ‘Hold on, Derek Jeter is not happy with the Yankees? What’s going on?’” Ortiz said. “Somebody needs to figure out what’s going on. I’ve been thinking: ‘Wait a minute, how come the legends are not happy once they get out of town?’ I don’t know. But I’m happy with the Red Sox. I’ll tell you that.”

The Baltimore Orioles have reached out to impending free agents Chris Tillman and Wade Miley to explore retaining them on incentive-laden one-year contracts.

Such an agreement with Miley seems unlikely. The Orioles have a $12 million club option on his contract, but they are expected to pay him a $500,000 buyout instead.

Phillies Hire Gabe Kapler As Manager

Oct 31, 2017 7:37 AM

After searching for at least a month, the Philadelphia Phillies have found their new manager in Gabe Kapler.

"I'm equal parts honored, humbled and excited by the opportunity with the Phillies, an elite franchise in a city rich in history, tradition, sports excellence and with amazingly passionate fans," Kapler said in a statement. "I believe there is no better place to build a winning environment, and I take that task very seriously."

Kapler most recently served as the director of player development for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Kapler beat out John Farrell, who was fired by the Boston Red Sox this month, and Triple-A manager Dusty Wathan for the job.

Kapler batted .268 with 82 homers and 386 RBIs over 12 seasons with six teams between 1998-2010. He had no previous ties to the Phillies.

"Gabe has a track record of leadership, winning, progressive thinking and working with young players, and we fully believe that he is the right person to guide this organization into the future," Matt Klentak said.

Mark Teixeira: Yankees Need 'Better Communicator' Than Girardi

Oct 30, 2017 7:49 AM

Mark Teixeira, who played under Joe Girardi for eight seasons, believes the New York Yankees need a manager that is a "better communicator" than the recently let-go skipper.

"We all know why Joe Girardi is not coming back," Teixeira told The New York Post. "We all know it's because of the communication and the intensity was a little bit too much. [General manager Brian Cashman] did an amazing job rebuilding this roster. He just wanted a different voice."

Teixeira and Girardi won a World Series together in 2009.

"Everyone loves Joe, everyone respects Joe, he is a good manager, he is a good man," the former first baseman said. "But with baseball the way it is played today and the need for a manager to be a better communicator and communicate with the front office the reasoning for doing things and to be a little bit more relaxed — especially in a place like New York, where the pressure is everywhere. He just wasn't the best man for the job anymore."

Rockies Search For Closer Will Include Greg Holland

Oct 30, 2017 7:37 AM

Greg Holland was a vital part of the Colorado Rockies' success this season, but there are no guarantees he'll be back.

Holland hasn't officially rejected his $15 million player option, but is expected to do so so he can become a free agent.

The Rockies will make a play to re-sign Holland, but they would have serious competition.

Astros, Dodgers Set Records During Wild Game 5

Oct 30, 2017 7:28 AM

The Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers set a number of records during Sunday night's 10-inning, 13-12 victory in Game 5 of the World Series.

The Astros became the first club to have five different players hit a home run in the Fall Classic.

The two teams also set a record for the most home runs in a World Series with 22. They also pushed the total number of homers hit in the postseason at 101 -- the most in a single postseason.

"I think it's crazy, man," Carlos Correa said. "To just be part of it is such a blessing. These games are hard on me. I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack out there every single time."
