Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik danced around questions about free-agent slugger Prince Fielder on Tuesday.
The executive wouldn't answer how fervently Seattle will pursue the first baseman that Zduriencik drafted while with the Brewers organization.
"I don't think it's in our best interest to do that," Zduriencik said.
"I apologize. I wish I could tell you a little more, but I don't think it's fair for us."

Rays Send Jaso To M's For Lueke
The Rays have acquired right-hander Josh Lueke and a player to be named or cash from the Mariners for catcher John Jaso.
The trade was announced on Sunday, according to an ESPN.com report.
Could Fielder Return To Milwaukee?
Prince Fielder has seen so little action as a free agent that there is a growing belief that he could actually re-sign with the Brewers.
A return to Milwaukee seemed very unlikely at the end of the season.
There has been some outside interest, including from the Mariners and Cubs.
Mariners Hoping To Be In On Fielder
The Mariners are hoping to be in the race to sign free-agent slugger Prince Fielder.
However, they don't plan to chase Albert Pujols.
Seattle isn't sure if there is room in their budget for Fielder, but they'll at least make an attempt.

Brother Ordered Held In Halman Slaying
An investigating judge has ordered the brother of slain Mariners outfielder Greg Halman to be detained for a further two weeks on suspicion of murder or manslaughter.
Halman was stabbed to death early Monday morning at an apartment in the port city of Rotterdam.
Police said his stabbing may have followed an argument about loud music.

Mariners outfielder Greg Halman may have been stabbed to death because of an argument about loud music.
Police spokeswoman Patricia Wessels says that loud music "appears to be the reason the victim walked downstairs," but police are still trying to piece together what happened after that.
Authorities are still interviewing the brother of Halman as a suspect in the death of the 24-year-old Dutch baseball player, who was killed in the early hours of Monday morning at an apartment in Rotterdam.
