Dice-K Leaves With Injury, Red Sox Lose To M's

Sep 4, 2014 1:08 PM

The Red Sox had two pitchers to be concerned about after Friday night’s loss to the Mariners, according to a Yahoo! Sports report. Daisuke Matsuzaka left in the fifth inning with elbow tightness after his velocity fell off from the start of the game. The injury doesn’t appear serious, but he will be checked out more on Saturday. “I think we think he’s going to be OK for his next start,” manager Terry Francona said. Bobby Jenks entered in the seventh to protect a lead and couldn’t do it. The struggling reliever gave up two runs and three hits, leaving Boston with its third loss in four games.

"I just need to be healthy now. I need to be here," Gutierrez said. Gutierrez visited the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota earlier this week, where he was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome as the cause of his stomach issues that first popped up last summer. There's no timetable for when Gutierrez might begin playing again.

King Felix Trade Possible In 2012?

Oct 26, 2014 2:32 AM

The Mariners won't trade pitcher Felix Hernandez this season, but Geoff Baker of The Seattle Times writes that all bets are off after the 2011 campaign. Baker cites the likelihood that Seattle won't contend in 2012. "No, the M's are not going to contend in 2012 either. The rest of this division is still way ahead of them and no one-year transformation is going to be that drastic," he wrote. "But by early 2012, the M's should have a much better idea than they do right now of when they are going to contend."

Mariners Don't Know When Gutierrez Will Play

Jul 3, 2014 10:09 PM

The Mariners haven't provided an update on outfielder Franklin Gutierrez recently, but the team has given up on the idea of him playing anytime soon. The mysterious stomach ailment that has left him unable to eat, feeling weak and suffering nausea, returned Friday in California, where he was scheduled to play a minor league game. Gutierrez has seen all Seattle's training staff and doctors and taken more than a dozen tests from spring training to well into the season.

Wedge, Wilson Feuding In Seattle

Aug 13, 2014 3:49 AM

Mariners manager Eric Wedge is feuding with second baseman Jack Wilson. Wilson was out of the lineup Friday night as Seattle hosted the Indians and it remains to be seen when the infielder will return to the field. He drew Wedge's ire when the veteran infielder pulled himself from Wednesday's loss at Texas after committing a pair of errors on consecutive potential inning-ending double plays that led to three Rangers runs. After the game, Wedge attempted to cover for Wilson, saying he was "hazy" and couldn't get straight after making the mistakes. Both Wedge and Wilson clarified what happened on Friday, with Wilson admitting he pulled himself. Wedge called the action "unspeakable." "The last thing I want to do is pull myself out of the game. Knowing going into it those were big double plays in a big spot, knowing that when I came out I didn't want to do any more damage," Wilson said. "This is something I'm learning. But that's a pretty big cost to lose a game, especially when you have a Cy Young guy on the mound and not getting it done for him at that point."

Ichiro Becomes Seattle's Hit Leader

Mar 10, 2014 6:36 PM

Ichiro Suzuki became Seattle's career hits leader with two infield bouncers Saturday night, including an RBI single in the ninth that plated the go-ahead run in a 5-2 victory over Oakland. "I wasn't thinking about my base hit," Suzuki said. "I wanted that run. That's what was more on my mind than the hit." Suzuki has 2,248 hits, one better than close friend Edgar Martinez's previous club record. "Today I broke his record [and] when you look at the numbers, that's a fact," Suzuki said. "But he's a hero back in Seattle. He's my hero as well. I played with Edgar for years and that's something that's important to me. That's precious." The outfielder broke the record on the 10th anniversary of his major league debut.

Ichiro Celebrates 10th Anniversary Of Debut

Apr 30, 2014 5:14 AM

Ichiro Suzuki, the only player left from Seattle's 2001 play team, celebrated the 10th anniversary of his major league debut on Friday. The outfielder has 10 straight 200-hit seasons, 10 consecutive All-Star appearances and 10 Gold Gloves. At age 37, Ichiro admits that he's a different person now. "It's tough, because the situation is different," he said when asked if he's even more driven now than when he was a rookie. "But what I can say is, 10 years ago when I first came here, I only thought about myself. "Because I'm here to perform. And being the first position player from Japan, you need to perform. You've got your flag behind your back saying, 'Perform more or you'll destroy the path from Japan.' So that said, I thought more about myself. Now I have more room, more space, to where I can think about the team. So in that way, I can look at it from a different way."
