Troy Tulowitzki Suffers Broken Right Thumb

Aug 1, 2016 1:06 PM

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was taken out of Sunday's loss to Baltimore two innings after he was hit on the right hand by a 93-mph fastball from Orioles starter Chris Tillman in the sixth.

Manager John Gibbons said Tulowitzki suffered a broken thumb. The Blue Jays will wait for the swelling to go down before deciding whether to place him on the disabled list.

"A little sore, it obviously got me pretty good,'' Tulowitzki said. "It's blown up.''

Still No Timetable For Clayton Kershaw's Return

Aug 1, 2016 1:06 PM

Five weeks after he last started a major league game, Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw still is not participating in baseball activities.

Kershaw said Tuesday that he intends to pitch again this season as he tries to recover from a herniated disk in his lower back, but no timetable for his return has been set.

"He's just doing core work, the back, strengthening," manager Dave Roberts said. "He hasn't picked up a baseball yet. Hopefully sooner than later, but no baseball activities."

Clayton Kershaw Determined To Return To Dodgers This Season

Jul 27, 2016 6:51 AM

Clayton Kershaw is determined to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers this season and be a difference maker.

"I'm trying to make it back to have an impact on this season for our team," Kershaw said. "I don't know what that means exactly."

Kershaw hasn't pitched since June 26 because of what was first diagnosed as a mild disk irritation in his lower back, but that was before a setback during a simulated game that has left his return date unknown.

The left-hander had a 1.79 ERA over his first 16 starts and had 145 strikeouts in 121 innings.

Kershaw's setback occurred after he threw in a simulated game at Dodger Stadium on July 16.

"I just knew there was something that was not right," he said. "I definitely felt it where I shouldn't have felt it."

Prince Fielder Headed For Another Season-Ending Neck Surgery

Jul 26, 2016 8:46 AM

Prince Fielder is expected to have season-ending neck surgery for the second time in three years.

Fielder got a second opinion on his neck Monday and the Texas Rangers say surgery was recommended.

An MRI last week showed a herniation between Fielder's C4 and C5 disks.

There is a chance Fielder's career could be in jeopardy.

"He rehabbed once from it and came back. I think with each additional surgery in that area it increases the risk involved and just the overall, his ability to get back," Jon Daniels said. "But it's not for me to speculate about that here today."

Matt Holliday Hit In Nose By Fastball; No Fractures

Jul 22, 2016 7:32 AM

Matt Holliday left Thursday night's gameafter getting hit on the nose by a pitch.

The St. Louis Cardinals said Holliday's nose was not fractured, but said he had a facial abrasion by his nose and upper lip. He showed no signs of a concussion and has been listed as day-to-day.

"I hate seeing that," Mike Matheny said. "I think we got real fortunate. Getting hit in the face, it's hard to say it's fortunate, but it could have been a lot worse. His beak's a little sore right now and still had a little blood leaking out of it, but structurally, everything checked out good."

Holliday immediately dropped after a 95 mph fastball by Andrew Cashner of the San Diego Padres came high and inside and caromed off the batter's nose in the sixth inning. Holliday got up and tried to take first base as blood poured out of his nose.

Jameson Taillon 'Doing Well' After Line Drive To Head

Jul 21, 2016 6:53 AM

Jameson Taillon is doing well after he was hit in the back of the head with a line drive that left the bat at 105 mph on Tuesday night.

The Pittsburgh Pirates' athletic trainer said the point of impact was the logo on the back of Taillon's cap.

"I've been in baseball 18 years -- 10 in the majors -- and it's the first time I've seen a pitcher get hit in that particular place," Todd Tomczyk said.

Hernan Perez of the Milwaukee Brewers hit the second-inning line drive that struck Taillon in the back of the head. The rookie right-hander stayed in the game, allowing only one run over six innings.

"He's doing well today and we're monitoring him," Tomczyk said.

There were four barriers, Tomczyk said, that helped prevent a brain injury to Taillon: "The cap itself, the logo, his hair and his skull."

L.A. Not Ruling Out Surgery For Clayton Kershaw

Jul 21, 2016 7:10 AM

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged the possibility that Clayton Kershaw could need surgery on his ailing back, although the club is hopeful it will not be needed and the ace will return to pitch this season.

Roberts was asked before Wednesday night's oss at Washington if there is more of a chance for surgery since the initial setback.

"To answer your question, yes," Roberts said. "I think that with the way it flared up, it's more of an indication that surgery is more of a possibility obviously with the way his back responded, but we're still hopeful that he will be back. When you're talking about the back, that is always an option, but we're certainly hopeful that Clayton will be back, absolutely."
