Andrew Miller Plans To Pitch Through Injury

Mar 31, 2016 4:49 PM

Andrew Miller doesn't plan to miss any time with a small fracture of his non-throwing wrist.

Miller, who suffered the injury fielding a line drive that struck him just below the glove in a game Wednesday, said he expects to be ready for Opening Day in spite of the injury.

"According to Wikipedia, it's not an important bone. It doesn't really do anything,'' Miller said of his broken pisiform, which is in the heel of the hand just above the wrist.

"It's my right hand; I don't really need it. I don't see any reason I can't work around it unless for some reason the doctor tells me I have to protect it for some reason that we don't foresee. I plan to be able to manipulate my glove around it and not really worry about it."

Yankees' Andrew Miller Suffers Chip Fracture In Wrist

Mar 31, 2016 7:42 AM

The New York Yankees suffered a blow to their bullpen on Wednesday when a CT scan revealed that Andrew Miller has a chip fracture in his right wrist.

Miller was hit by a line drive in the seventh inning of a game against the Atlanta Braves.

The reliever will be evaluated by a hand specialist to determine the next course of action. The Yankees did not say how long Miller is expected to be out.

The injury occurred on Miller's first and only pitch of the game, which was lined back at him by Braves pinch-hitter Willians Astudillo.

Mets Scratch Matt Harvey With Undisclosed Issue

Mar 28, 2016 4:46 PM

Matt Harvey is dealing with an undisclosed medical issue that may place his Opening Day start for the New York Mets on Sunday in jeopardy.

Sandy Alderson declined to specify the issue, other than to say it was not related to an elbow or shoulder or anything else orthopedic.

"It's a non-baseball medical issue that we have to address," Alderson said. "It came up this morning as far as I know. There will be some follow-up tests and consultation that will take place over the next couple of days."

Asked if there is any gravity to the undisclosed issue, Alderson added: "I think it's a little early to attach any level of concern. ... I think we need to wait for more medical information before we decide it's of concern, or great concern, or no concern."

Harvey will be scratched from Tuesday's Grapefruit League start against the Miami Marlins. That had been slated to be his final tuneup for Opening Day.

Michael Brantley Won't Be Ready For Opening Day

Mar 28, 2016 6:55 AM

Michael Brantley will not be in the lineup for the Cleveland Indians on opening day despite making major progress following offseason shoulder surgery.

Brantley had targeted the April 4 opener against the Boston Red Sox as his return date, but Terry Francona said Sunday that he is not quite ready and will not be in left field on opening day.

"We will let this thing calm down a little bit, then ramp him back up," Francona said. "He's not going to start the season with us as our starting left fielder. He will certainly travel with us. So if that's the case, let's give him a chance to be healthy for the whole year."

Brantley, who underwent surgery in November, reported some soreness in his right shoulder after playing in only two exhibition games.

He hit .310/.379/.480 with 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases in 529 at-bats last season.

A.J. Pollock May Begin Season On DL

Mar 27, 2016 1:37 AM

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said opening the season on the DL is an option for outfielder A.J. Pollock.

Pollock has been dealing with soreness in his right elbow since March 8, and he was expected back in the lineup by early next week. Hale said he wants Pollock to get at least 35 at-bats in the remaining spring games.

"He has to get enough at-bats to feel ready," Hale told reporters. "So if that's not possible, then maybe the DL is an option."

Jake Arrieta Leaves With Blister, Says He'll Be Ready For Opener

Mar 25, 2016 6:09 AM

Jake Arrieta says he'll be ready for Opening Day on April 4 despite leaving Thursday's spring start against the San Francisco Giants in the first inning with a blister on his thumb.

"[We] noticed in the bullpen I was having a hard time with it," Arrieta said. "No point in staying out there and having the same thing happen over and over again to each hitter."

Arrieta allowed five runs in the first inning of the Chicago Cubs' eventual victory.

The right-hander blamed the dry Arizona climate for the blister on his thumb Thursday and for one last week as well. He said he used super glue to cover it, but the glue caused the ball to slip out of his hand.

"It was tender, and the skin was starting to come apart again," Arrieta said. "It's from the dryness out here.

"Everything was slipping off my thumb. Couldn't really finish or get the good rotation on my breaking stuff. It's really not that bad."

Josh Hamilton is optimistic about his troublesome left knee as the 2016 season approaches.

"Honestly, it's the best it has felt in five years," Hamilton said Thursday.

"It's good. ... It's going real good," Hamilton said.

Hamilton will finish spring training with the Texas Rangers, go with them to Arlington for Opening Day and then return to Surprise to continue his workouts.
