Mariners Trade Austin Jackson To Cubs

Sep 1, 2015 4:28 PM

The Chicago Cubs will acquire Austin Jackson from the Seattle Mariners.

Jackson cleared trade waivers and the Cubs can place him on their postseason roster because he was acquired before Sept. 1.

Seattle will receive a player to be named later and a $211,000 international signing slot. Chicago will receive some cash to offset what is left on Jackson's $7.7 million salary.

The Cleveland Indians won't receive compensation from the Toronto Blue Jays as executive Mark Shapiro leaves this coming offseason.

White Sox Pull David Robertson Off Waivers

Aug 31, 2015 4:38 PM

The New York Yankees claimed David Robertson off waivers, but the Chicago White Sox have pulled the reliever back.

The two clubs didn't have legitimate trade talks over the weekend.

The deadline to make a team's postseason roster is Monday, so additions are unlikely in September.

J.P. Howell Attains 2016 Player Option

Aug 31, 2015 7:29 AM

J.P. Howell made his 52nd appearance for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday night, also his 120th since the start of the 2014 season.

Reaching that milestone means that Howell's $6.5 million option for 2016 has now converted into a player option.

Howell's option will become official provided he doesn't end the season on the disabled list.

Mike Hazen Is Strong Candidate To Become Boston's GM

Aug 31, 2015 7:25 AM

As Dave Dombrowski of the Boston Red Sox searches for a new general manager, Mike Hazen is a stronger candidate than most realize, according to a report by Peter Gammons.

Hazen is currently the team's assistant general manager, having remained on the job despite the dismissal of Ben Cherington earlier this month.

He has worked his way up the baseball operations ladder, much like Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer and Cherington before him.

Pirates Unlikely To Call Up Tyler Glasnow

Aug 31, 2015 7:16 AM

The Pittsburgh Pirates are unlikely to call up prospect Tyler Glasnow in the month of September.

Glasnow has made six starts at the Triple-A level, posting a 0.81 ERA and striking out 10.5 batters per nine innings.

"Left the door open because he's doing some really good things, but he continues to remind us there are still some things he needs to do," Neal Huntington said. "At this point he is not on our radar to come up here in September or October. We still feel there is development (needed).

"(Glasnow) is not in our plans."

He is walking 4.6 batters per nine at Triple-A.

Red Sox Going With Jean Machi At Closer

Aug 31, 2015 7:11 AM

After Junichi Tazawa walked four batters in a row on Friday, the Boston Red Sox looked for another option at closer.

Torey Lovullo announced on Sunday morning that Jean Machi would be the club's closer going forward. The Red Sox added Machi in late-July via a waiver claim from the San Francisco Giants.

Koji Uehara, Boston’s closer for the last three seasons, is out for the year with a fractured right wrist.

Machi, a 33-year-old right-hander, is 3-for-3 in save opportunities for the Red Sox, working a 1-2-3 ninth in a 3-1 victory Saturday.

Matt Harvey Closing In On Innings Limit

Aug 31, 2015 9:23 PM

Matt Harvey has enjoyed his best month of the season in August, but trouble may be coming for the New York Mets.

Harvey, who is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, allowed just one run in four starts. He struck out 24 and walked just two while allowing 15 hits in 27 innings.

The issue for Harvey and the Mets is that he's nearing the innings limit (180) prescribed by surgeons. With four weeks remaining in the regular season and the playoffs looming, Harvey is at 160 innings.

Could Jake Arrieta Win NL Cy Young?

Aug 31, 2015 7:00 AM

The National League Cy Young conversation has largely been limited to teammates Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw since the All-Star break, but Jake Arrieta's no-hitter on Sunday night may help him earn consideration.

Arrieta went 6-0 with a 0.43 ERA and allowed just 19 hits in 42⅓ innings pitched in August.

The Chicago Cubs starter has a higher ERA than Greinke's 1.61 at 2.11, but rates better than Kershaw (2.24) entering Monday's action. Wins and losses have been dismissed by many in favor of newer statistics, but Arrieta leads all of baseball with 17 wins.
