Jays Offered Alex Anthopoulos Five-Year, $10M Extension

Nov 1, 2015 10:25 AM

Alex Anthopoulos was offered a five-year, $10 million contract to remain with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Anthopoulos was also offered an early opt-out in his contract, likely after one year.

Anthopoulos instead decided to leave the Jays and not work under Mark Shapiro, which stunned nearly all of Major League Baseball.

"I just didn't feel like this was the right fit going forward," he said. "It was not an easy (decision). Obviously, everyone knows how I feel about the organization, the city, the country."

Mets '100 Percent' Sticking With Conforto

Oct 30, 2015 4:57 PM

The New York Mets are "100 percent" behind Michael Conforto and the rookie outfielder will remain in the lineup as the World Series progresses.

"It was 100 percent: 'Listen, this is the team that we won with. This is the team that had the most success against right-handed pitching. This is the team we should go with,'" Terry Collins said. "This guy has had some very, very good at-bats. He has nothing to show for it. But, certainly, we can't put what we're doing offensively on the shoulders of Michael Conforto. He goes up there and every time he gets in the batter's box you think he's going to hit one in the seats. The confidence is there from the coaches, and I totally agree with it.

"If you show panic now, it could spread in the clubhouse. And I'm not going to do that. I like our lineup. I like what they've done all year long. You go through ups and downs. But, as we've seen, when they break out, they're good. And tonight they need to break out."

Conforto is hitless in 19 at-bats since homering against Zack Greinke in the rookie's first postseason plate appearance in Game 2 of the NLDS.

The Mets could have started Juan Lagares in center field and moved Yoenis Cespedes over to left field.

Royals Aren't Letting Daniel Murphy Beat Them

Oct 31, 2015 3:30 PM

The Kansas City Royals have worked hard to prevent Daniel Murphy from beating them through the first two games of the World Series.

Murphy set a Major League record with a home run in six straight postseason games, including one is each of the four games the New York Mets played in the NLCS against the Chicago Cubs.

"He really hasn't gotten too many pitches to hit -- that's the bottom line," hitting coach Kevin Long said. "Pitches are off the plate. Pitches are low. Pitches are high. He's doing what he needs to do. He's taking what they've given him. They haven't given him a whole lot."

Murphy did his damage earlier this postseason on pitches to the middle and outer thirds of the plate. He saw six pitches in his first at-bat of Game 2. The only one not on the inner third was a 1-2 changeup in the dirt. Overall in Game 2, Murphy saw 23 pitches in four plate appearances. None of them touched the middle third of the strike zone.

"I just think that if they execute, it's always going to be a tough at-bat," Murphy said. "I feel like they've executed well. We've gotten some pitches to hit. I've gotten some pitches to hit that I've missed. So we'll regroup and get ready for Game 3."
