New York Mets Wiretap

Carlos Beltran said the New York Mets reached out to him about their managerial vacancy after firing Carlos Mendoza last month, though he ultimately declined to pursue the role at this time. Beltran addressed the conversation during a Zoom call with reporters Monday, days before his Hall of Fame induction in Cooperstown.

"Yes, I had conversations with a few people within the organization, and I don't know, I just didn't feel it was the right thing for me to do," said Beltran. "And I have to tell you that, having the opportunity to manage, I would say that that's probably in my bucket list."

Beltran currently serves as special assistant to Mets baseball operations president David Stearns, a role he said he values because of his close working relationship with the organization's decision-makers. Stearns has said interim manager Andy Green will return to his position as farm director after this season, potentially leaving the managerial job open again in the future.

Beltran stopped short of saying the timing was right for him to take on that role now.

"I understand that my name has been mentioned about being a manager and all that, and I'm proud of that," said Beltran. "But at the same time, I don't know, man, I've got to think deeply about what my next step is going to be."

Beltran previously served as Mets manager briefly in November 2019 before being fired the following January after MLB's investigation into the Houston Astros' sign-stealing scheme named him as the only player in its report. Beltran played for Houston's 2017 championship team but had already retired by the time of the investigation.

Beltran expressed continued frustration with how the situation unfolded.

"I feel like when you dig deep into the case and you dig deep into who I was as a player and how I behaved as a player throughout my career, I don't know, it created some red flags on the process," said Beltran. "It created red flags on the investigation. I gotta be honest, I gotta tell you how I feel, because sometimes it's hard for me to believe that I ended up in that position (as) the only player mentioned in the report."

Beltran noted that as a retired player at the time, he lacked union representation during the investigation, unlike active players and executives such as former Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow, manager A.J. Hinch and coach Alex Cora, all of whom faced suspensions.

"They're going to allow Carlos Beltran to manage the Mets?" said Beltran. "I mean, that's impossible. So, you know, I feel like mentioning Carlos Beltran in the report, that was my suspension and that's how I feel."

Beltran also pushed back on the idea that he was solely responsible for the sign-stealing scheme, describing it as a collective effort within the organization.

"I know that as a team we got together to do what we did, but I've got to tell you that this was not like one player's idea," said Beltran. "This was a team being together, from top to bottom, to do something that we felt was going to help us win."

The New York Mets are considered unlikely to trade away Francisco Lindor at the trade deadline, sources tell The Athletic. While the Mets are open to discussing nearly all of their players, Lindor represents a high bar for any interested team.

Lindor, 32, holds trade veto power as a 10-year veteran who has spent the past five consecutive seasons with the same club. He is owed more than $160 million through 2031, and sources with knowledge of the situation said New York has no particular interest in absorbing money in a potential deal, viewing him as a player who can still help the team win next season.

Lindor declined to comment when The Athletic raised the subject of his no-trade protection in a recent conversation. A person close to him said he has no desire to leave New York and remains comfortable with the organization and city.

The Mets, sitting at 41-57, are fielding calls as sellers in a thin trade market. According to SNY, the team is not expected to engage in trade discussions involving Juan Soto, Nolan McLean, Christian Scott, A.J. Ewing or Carson Benge.

Lindor's situation stands apart given his track record, though he is enduring a difficult individual season. He has committed uncharacteristic defensive lapses and posted below-average defensive metrics despite his reputation for reliability. Offensively, he is batting just .210 with a .654 OPS.

Injuries have limited Lindor to 41 games and 175 plate appearances this season. A hamate bone surgery disrupted his spring training, and a calf injury sidelined him for two months before he returned from the injured list on June 24.

The Chicago White Sox selected UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky with the No. 1 overall pick Saturday, taking the consensus top prospect in this year's class despite late buzz around Grady Emerson and Vahn Lackey. Cholowsky posted a 1.088 OPS during his junior season and profiles as a well-rounded shortstop with a fast track to the majors.

The Tampa Bay Rays followed by selecting Fort Worth Christian High School shortstop Grady Emerson, the top-ranked high school position player in the draft. Emerson earned Gatorade National Player of the Year honors and fills a need for a Rays organization still searching for stability at shortstop.

The Minnesota Twins took Georgia Tech catcher Vahn Lackey third overall after he hit .397 with 20 home runs this season, continuing the school's pipeline of first-round catchers.

The San Francisco Giants then selected UC Santa Barbara right-hander Jackson Flora fourth, the top pitching prospect in a class considered thin on arms.

The Pittsburgh Pirates rounded out the top five by taking LSU outfielder Derek Curiel, a draft-eligible sophomore who batted .353 with strong instincts in center field.

Major League Baseball revealed its 2026 All-Star Game starting lineups Saturday, with Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani topping the fan vote and three teammates joining him in the National League's starting group.

Ohtani will serve as designated hitter for the NL, appearing alongside Freddie Freeman at first base, Max Muncy at third and Andy Pages in the outfield. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Friday that Ohtani probably won't pitch in the exhibition after they altered his workload schedule.

Additional NL starters include Juan Soto of the New York Mets, Brandon Marsh of the Philadelphia Phillies, CJ Abrams of the Washington Nationals, and Atlanta Braves duo Ozzie Albies and Drake Baldwin.

American League voting leader Ernie Clement will start alongside fellow Toronto Blue Jays infielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr., though Guerrero has since withdrawn from the game. Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz will replace him after winning the players' vote at that position.

Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero, Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers and Houston Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez round out the AL infield and battery. Mike Trout, Aaron Judge and Byron Buxton comprise the American League's starting outfield.

This year's contest takes place July 14 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Fans selected the starters, while a combination of league officials and current players, managers and coaches chose the reserves.

The Dodgers, Braves and Phillies each landed a league-best five All-Stars apiece. Five starters, Langeliers, Clement, Baldwin, Marsh and Pages, earned their first career selections, while Freeman and Chris Sale are making their 10th appearances.

Trout returns for his 12th All-Star nod and first since 2023, currently recovering from a hamstring injury but expected to play. MLB will feature players wearing original team uniforms this year rather than specialized event jerseys.

When the last-place New York Mets fired manager Carlos Mendoza last week, a follow-up question inevitably surfaced: Would president of baseball operations David Stearns follow Mendoza out the door? The answer from Mets owner Steve Cohen is an emphatic no.

Cohen told the New York Post on Wednesday that he is not considering dismissing Stearns, who is in the third year of a five-year contract, despite a second straight disappointing season.

"We'll figure out what changes that need to be made," Cohen said. "But the change that's not gonna be made is moving David out at this point. I'm just not gonna do it."

Hours after the New York Mets fired manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday, prominent members of the organization took turns assuming responsibility for the team's 34-47 start to the season while lauding Mendoza's credentials, acumen and work ethic.

"We failed Mendy," shortstop Francisco Lindor said. "I failed Mendy. I didn't play to my capability to help him win as many games as we could. And, yeah, this one's on us as well."

The New York Mets dismissed manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday with the club sitting at 34-47 and riding a six-game losing streak. Former San Diego Padres manager Andy Green will serve as interim manager for the remainder of the season.

Mendoza, 46, was in his third season with the club. The Mets declined to exercise a contract option for 2027.

"Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis," said Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns. "Unfortunately, we know we are falling short and change is necessary to move forward."

Mendoza's tenure produced wildly inconsistent results. He guided the Mets to the National League Championship Series in 2024, rallying the club from one of the worst records in baseball in June to within two games of the World Series. His second season reversed course entirely, as the Mets owned the best record in baseball before collapsing over the final three and a half months and missing the postseason.

The current campaign has been equally dismal despite significant offseason investment. New York carries the second-most expensive roster in Major League Baseball, behind only the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, yet ranks among the worst offensive teams in the league.

Stearns overhauled the roster extensively this past winter, acquiring Marcus Semien, Luis Robert Jr., Freddy Peralta and Tobias Myers via trade while signing Bo Bichette, Jorge Polanco, Devin Williams and Luke Weaver in free agency. The rebuild was constructed around cornerstones Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor.

Green, 48, joined the Mets organization in 2023 as senior vice president of baseball development. He previously managed San Diego from 2016 to 2019, posting a 274-366 record.

The Chicago Cubs, desperate to bolster a starting rotation ravaged by injuries, agreed to acquire struggling New York Mets left-hander David Peterson in exchange for minor league infielder Cole Mathis on Wednesday night, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan, hours after completing a doubleheader sweep of the Mets at Citi Field.

New York Mets outfielder Juan Soto is speaking out against Major League Baseball's proposed salary cap, which would allocate more than 20 percent of the Mets' theoretical cap space to his contract alone. Soto holds the largest contract in baseball history.

"I don't think that's right, to have a cap," said Soto. "Baseball is doing great. We've been increasing every year. It's been great for baseball. We are in the best moment in baseball right now in all kinds of ways. Why should we have a cap?"

MLB's opening proposal calls for a $245.3 million cap and $171.2 million floor for 2027, with a 50-50 revenue split. Soto is scheduled to earn $57.5 million that season under his 15-year, $765 million contract signed with New York in December 2024.

Mets pitcher David Peterson, the team's union representative, was equally blunt.

"It's ridiculous," said Peterson.

Soto responded simply when told of Peterson's remarks: "I'd agree with that."

League spokesperson Glen Caplin defended the proposal, citing competitive imbalance.

"The biggest issue we need to solve next to continue to grow the game off the field is fixing the payroll disparity unseen in any other major U.S. sport," said Caplin. "Fans overwhelmingly support a salary cap and floor like in the other leagues."

Peterson argued baseball's structure differs fundamentally from basketball, where cap systems are more practical given smaller rosters.

"It works in basketball in that way because they don't have as many guys, so you have a lot less guys for the pot to go around," said Peterson. "And that's a league where one or two people on the team pretty much sell the team. That's a lot harder to do in baseball."

New York's 2026 payroll stands at approximately $368 million. Despite the investment, the Mets sit at 27-35. Soto, however, has posted a 165 wRC+ and .959 OPS with 13 home runs despite missing 16 April games.

Lee Mazzilli and Bobby Valentine, longtime friends, former roommates and New York Mets teammates who represent two different eras of the franchise, were still finishing each other's sentences when they were inducted into the team's Hall of Fame before Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins.

"When we were rooming together, we couldn't imagine us sitting in the room at nighttime and saying ..." Mazzilli said before Valentine interrupted him. 

"Because we never sat in the room at nighttime," Valentine said with a laugh.
