Michael Cuddyer Retires At 36 After 15 MLB Seasons

Dec 14, 2015 8:35 AM

Michael Cuddyer has announced his retirement after 15 seasons in the majors.

Cuddyer, 36, hit .259 with 10 homers and 41 RBIs in 379 at-bats for the Mets in 2015.

"I've made the decision to retire. With one year left on my contract, it is especially difficult to imagine not suiting up in a Mets uniform for one more year," Cuddyer said. "As an athlete, retiring is the toughest decision you have to make and I don't make it lightly. I've always run out every hit like it was my last. As an untested high school kid drafted with a dream, I've never taken a single moment in the Majors for granted. It goes against every grain in my body to consider a future without the game. But after 15 years, the toll on my body has finally caught up to me."

Cuddyer was scheduled to make $12.5 million next season. The Mets are expected to have bought out the remaining year.

Mets, Pirates Complete Niese-For-Walker Trade

Dec 10, 2015 5:58 AM

The New York Mets have acquired Neil Walker from the Pittsburgh Pirates for Jonathan Niese.

New York focused on acquiring Walker after Ben Zobrist signed with the Chicago Cubs in free agency.

Mets assistant general manager John Ricco compared the trade for Walker to how the Mets moved on from their aborted pursuit of Carlos Gomez at the trade deadline. The Mets turned around and acquired Yoenis Cespedes.

"It came together pretty quickly today," Ricco said. "I think the start of it was last night. Roy Smith, one of our top scouts, was in contact with the Pirates. They mentioned Neil Walker might be available. We started talking about some names back and forth. It really came together about midday today to where we got some traction and were able to get a deal done. ... He's a guy we had on our short list, but didn't know if he would be available. We view him as a real positive alternative to the deal we were looking to do the other day. He fits on a lot of different levels -- a switch-hitter. He's got some power. A real good fit for our team. I think we're pretty happy to have him."

Mets Meet With Ben Zobrist's Agent

Dec 8, 2015 4:04 PM

The New York Mets met with Ben Zobrist's agent on Monday afternoon at the winter meetings.

However, no plans have been made to meet with Zobrist himself again.

Zobrist reportedly will meet in person with the Washington Nationals on Tuesday. The San Francisco Giants are another suitor for the utility man. Zobrist visited New York last Wednesday.

"I think we spent enough time with him that, unless he has more questions for us, if we see him, it will just be to say hello and that’s about it," John Ricco said. "There's nothing formally set up right now."
