Omar Minaya is returning to the Mets as a special assistant to Sandy Alderson, who replaced him as general manager after the 2010 season.

Minaya was the Mets' senior assistant GM from September 1997 until February 2002, when he joined the Montreal Expos as Major League Baseball's first Hispanic GM. He returned to the Mets as GM after the 2004 season, helped put together a roster that reached Game 7 of the National League Championship Series in 2006, then was fired after consecutive seasons with losing records.

The New York Mets have announced that Sandy Alderson has received a contract extension.

The length of the general manager's new deal wasn't specified.

Alderson's previous deal ran through last season.

"I feel that we have some unfinished business," he said in a statement. "Spring training is around the corner and our quest to return to the postseason will continue."

The New York Mets have "reached out" to Adrian Gonzalez.

The Mets have an in-house option at first base in Dominic Smith.

The 35-year-old Gonzalez, however, could be had for the league minimum. The Atlanta Braves are on the hook for the remainder of his salary.

The New York Mets have spoken to at least two teams about a Matt Harvey trade, according to a report.

The Mets would like to trade Harvey for a reliever.

Sandy Alderson said Sunday that no player is untouchable on New York's roster.

Harvey, 28, is eligible for arbitration this winter and then free agency in the fall of 2018.

The Seattle Mariners, New York Mets and Colorado Rockies are showing interest in free agent Jay Bruce, according to a report.

The Mets traded Bruce to the Cleveland Indians midway through this past season.

Bruce, 30, slashed .254/.324/.508 with 36 home runs in 617 plate appearances split between the Mets and Indians.
