The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired Justin Morneau from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for outfielder Alex Presley and a player to be named later.

Pittsburgh entered Saturday tied with the St. Louis Cardinals for first place in the National League Central.

Morneau, who is in the final year of his contract and has spent his entire 11-year career with the Twins, is hitting .259/.315/.426 with 17 home runs and 74 RBI.

Josh Willingham is glad the Minnesota Twins decided to pull him back off waivers without trading him.

The Twins were unable to work out a deal with the Baltimore Orioles before Friday's deadline.

Willingham will now remain with Minnesota through at least the end of this season. He is under contract for 2014 at $7 million.

"I'm just glad it's over," he said. "Now I know where I'm going to be."

Willingham said he knew a trade wasn't completed when he didn't hear anything from the Twins or his agent on Friday.

"I'm comfortable here so I'd like to stay here," Willingham said. " The bottom line is I didn't have any control so I didn't worry myself with it."

The Philadelphia Phillies didn't place Cliff Lee on revocable trade waivers this week, according to sources.

He can not be traded in time to become eligible for a postseason roster.

The Phillies demonstrated prior to the July 31 deadline that they had little interest in trading Lee, who was placed on waivers and claimed by the Los Angeles Dodgers last summer. Philadelphia ended up pulling him back.

The San Diego Padres pulled Chase Headley off waivers after he was claimed, according to sources.

Headley will now remain with the Padres through the remainder of the season.

The team is expected to try to sign Headley to a multiyear contract this winter. San Diego could field trade offers if they aren't able to extend his deal.

The Baltimore Orioles remain engaged in talks to add a hitter for the stretch run.

The Orioles claimed Michael Morse and Josh Willingham on waivers and are in discussions with the Seattle Mariners and Minnesota Twins, respectively, according to sources.

The Milwaukee Brewers are working to deal one of their relievers.

The deadline for teams to acquire players that will be eligible for postseason rosters is Saturday.

The Orioles have placed a waiver claim on Twins slugger Josh Willingham, the Baltimore Sun reported.

The O's claimed Willingham on Wednesday afternoon, according to the paper, meaning that the team will have until Friday afternoon to agree to a trade with the Twins.

A number of players were placed on revocable waivers on Tuesday, including Kansas City Royals right-hander Ervin Santana.

Francisco Rodriguez (Baltimore Orioles), Wesley Wright and David DeJesus (Tampa Bay Rays) also landed on waivers.

The Pittsburgh Pirates added Marlon Byrd on Tuesday and they are now interested in acquiring Justin Morneau from the Minnesota Twins.

Morneau has cleared waivers and the Twins are reportedly willing to pay some of the $3 million he is owed over the remainder of the season depending on the prospect received in return.

He is hitting .261/.318/.420 with 15 home runs and 72 RBIs for Minnesota this season.

Mike Rizzo says the Washington Nationals didn't mistakenly claim David DeJesus off waivers earlier this month.

It had been reported that the club may have claimed DeJesus by accident, leading them to immediately place him back on waivers and eventually trade him to the Tampa Bay Rays for a prospect.

"I wasn't concerned about being stuck with David, as I like him a lot," Rizzo said. "I did know of three-four teams behind me (in the waiver process) that would have interest.

"The player from Tampa Bay is not nearly a sexy prospect, but we had solid reports on him and he will be, at worst, added depth. I would have liked (DeJesus) to go unclaimed — I think I could have made a better deal with several interested teams."
