Miguel Cabrera Out With Two Herniated Disks

Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera was diagnosed Sunday with two herniated disks in his back.

Cabrera left Saturday's 10-4 loss to Minnesota because of tightness in his lower back. The Tigers said Sunday that an MRI showed damage between the L3 and L4, and the L4 and L5 disks.

Harper Could Return To Nats' Lineup Monday

Bryce Harper could come off the disabled list and return to the Nationals' lineup Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Philadelphia.

"We're still trying to make up our minds," manager Dusty Baker said after Sunday's victory over the New York Mets. "So I will let you know [Monday]."

Harper has been sidelined with a bone bruise in his left knee since slipping on a wet base while running out a grounder Aug. 12. Before getting hurt, the star slugger was batting .326 with 29 home runs and 87 RBIs in 106 games.

Bryce Harper Takes BP, Hopes To Return For NLDS

Bryce Harper took batting practice on Sunday for the first time since suffering a knee injury last month.

Harper has also run some sprints in the outfield and drills running to first base. He hopes to be in the lineup for the Washington Nationals for Game 1 of the NLDS in a little more than two weeks.

"I hope so. That's definitely in my head," he said. "That's what I want to do. That's where I want to be. But it takes time. Just trying to do the best I can to get out here and do the things I can to get back and get ready, and see where it's at."

Brewers Lose Jimmy Nelson For 2017

Jimmy Nelson will miss the remainder of the season for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Nelson has a right rotator cuff strain and partial anterior labrum tear.

"Right now we know the mechanism of injury, which was sliding into the base," Stearns said. "We know generally what the injury is from the tests that we conducted this morning. In terms of treatment options, that is still to be determined."

Nelson is 12-6 with a 3.49 ERA, a career high for victories.

David Wright To Have Shoulder Surgery

Mets third baseman David Wright, who has not played in over 15 months while recovering from neck surgery, will undergo another operation Tuesday to repair his rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

The Mets announced the latest surgery for Wright on Monday, one week after the veteran's minor league rehab assignment was shut down.

The Mets captain has spent this entire season attempting to come back from neck surgery for a cervical disk herniation.

Nats To Start Cole Over Strasburg On Monday

Nationals manager Dusty Baker said he plans to shuffle the team's pitching rotation heading into Monday's game against the Marlins.

Baker said the team will insert A.J. Cole into the rotation and start him on Monday, replacing scheduled starter Stephen Strasburg in the series opener between NL East foes.

Astros Activate Carlos Correa

Astros shortstop Carlos Correa has been activated from the disabled list after being sidelined six weeks with a torn thumb ligament.

The Astros announced the roster move, which had been expected, before Sunday's afternoon game against the Mets. Correa will start at shortstop and return to the cleanup spot in the lineup.

Correa has been sidelined since July 18 after suffering the injury to his left thumb, which required surgery.

Scherzer Leaves Game Limping, Downplays Injury

Washington's Max Scherzer was lifted after throwing 75 pitches over five innings, one inning after he limped to first base in an at-bat.

A liner from Milwaukee's Travis Shaw hit the 2016 NL Cy Young Award winner on his left leg in the first. In Scherzer's fifth-inning plate appearance, he hit a grounder to shortstop, limped to first and was thrown out easily.

Michael Conforto To Have Shoulder Surgery

Mets outfielder Michael Conforto will undergo shoulder surgery and will likely be in rehabilitation for months, ending his breakout season on a down note.

Conforto was injured Aug. 24 during a swing, and an MRI on his left shoulder revealed a tear in the posterior capsule. The team said that a definite timetable for his recovery won't be known until after the surgery.
