Trea Turner Out Indefinitely With Broken Wrist

Jun 30, 2017 8:01 AM

The Washington Nationals will be without Trea Turner indefinitely because of a broken wrist.

Turner was hit in the right wrist by a 96 mph fastball from Chicago Cubs reliever Pedro Strop in the seventh inning on Thursday night.

He remained in the game and caught a pop-up in the top of the eighth inning, but was replaced in the top of the ninth.

"I didn't know," Turner said. "I had tape on my wrist, so initially it didn't feel that bad. But I went out there and tried throwing. It hurt to lob the ball, but it felt fine when I threw it as hard as I could or basically full speed.

"So I stayed in there a little bit, and then after a little while it started stiffening up on me so I figured I'd get out of there. In a close game, didn't want to make a double-cut play or whatever it might be. I figured (Stephen) Drew might have a better shot or Difo. They'd have a better shot at playing some defense."

Turner, 24, is hitting .279/.324/.422 with seven home runs, 32 RBI and 35 stolen bases.

Yankees Rookie Ruptures Patellar Tendon In Debut

Jun 30, 2017 7:47 AM

Dustin Fowler suffered an open rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee crashing into the first-base-line rail during Thursday night's game between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.

The injury occurred in the first inning of his Major League debut.

The Yankees said he would undergo surgery later in Thursday evening at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center. Joe Girardi said Fowler's season is over and he thought the recovery time would be at least six months and possibly longer.

"I was in tears, actually," Girardi said. "Because I know what it takes to get here and how hard he has worked and what is supposed to be a really exciting day for him turns into a really bad day. I'm still disbelief. I'm in tears for the kid."

Fowler, 22, batted .293 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs in 70 Triple-A games.

Koda Glover Dealing With Severe Shoulder Inflammation

Jun 30, 2017 8:35 AM

Koda Glover may not pitch for the Washington Nationals anytime soon.

Glover, who has been on the disabled list with lower back stiffness, revealed Wednesday that he has "severe inflammation of the rotator cuff and two strains" in his right shoulder.

There is no timetable for Glover's return, but he hasn't been cleared to start throwing yet.

"It's obviously frustrating," he said. "You want to play. It's what you wake up to do. It’s your job. But it's one of them things where it's kind of out of your control. I'm just doing what I can to get healthy and be back as soon as possible."

Kris Bryant Sprains Ankle, May Require DL Stint

Jun 29, 2017 7:48 AM

Kris Bryant left Wednesday night's game against the Washington Nationals after stepping awkwardly on third base following his catch of a pop fly in the fifth inning.

Bryant has a mild to moderate sprain of his right ankle, according to the Chicago Cubs. He won't play on Thursday and the club isn't sure if he will need to go on the 10-day disabled list.

"The awkward momentum off the base caused it," Joe Maddon said. "I was watching closely. It was more painful than you might think, but I've done it, so you know it can really be a sprain.

"It's unfortunate. Hopefully, it's just going to be a couple days."

Yankees' Prospect Gleyber Torres To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Jun 20, 2017 7:45 AM

New York Yankees prospect Gleyber Torres has a torn ligament in his non-throwing elbow and will miss the remainder of the season.

Torres will undergo Tommy John surgery on his left elbow but is expected to recover in time for spring training in 2018. The infielder was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

"It is unfortunate," Brian Cashman said. "I'm thankful that it is a correctable problem."

Had he not been injured, Torres might have been called up by the Yankees at midseason.

Dustin Pedroia Sent To Hospital After HBP

Jun 19, 2017 7:27 AM

Dustin Pedroia was taken to a nearby hospital after he was hit in the back by a pitch in Sunday night's game between the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros.

Pedroia had X-rays on his rib area.

"The pitch hit in the left lat area, left rib cage. It continued to swell and tighten up," John Farrell said. "He was losing a lot of range of motion with the left arm, so we had to get him off his feet. We'll have a better read once he goes through the exam here at the local hospital."

Pedroia was the second batter hit by Astros pitcher James Hoyt in the seventh inning. When Pedroia departed, Josh Rutledge moved from third base to second and Pablo Sandoval entered the contest at third.

Shoulder Pain May End Bronson Arroyo's Career

Jun 19, 2017 12:58 AM

Bronson Arroyo says his career might be at "checkmate" because of pain in his right throwing shoulder.

The 40-year-old Arroyo lasted just three innings against the Dodgers on Sunday, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in the Reds' 8-7 loss. He also allowed his major league-leading 23rd home run (off the bat of the Dodgers' Logan Forsythe). Arroyo got a no-decision Sunday but is 3-5 with a 7.35 ERA in 14 starts.

He is pitching in the majors this season for the first time since 2014, coming back from Tommy John surgery more than two years ago.
