Steven Matz Unlikely To Be Ready For Opener

Mar 30, 2017 8:35 AM

Steven Matz is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day because of tenderness in his left elbow, the New York Mets have announced.

"He's being examined today," Collins said Wednesday. "We should know more, but we don't plan on having him pitch the next few days."

Matz is expected to have an MRI. The left-hander threw on the side on Monday and Tuesday and was still feeling pain.

"Nothing's changed over the last couple of days," Collins said. "It's just that the last two days he played catch, and he still feels it, so we thought it would be important to have him looked at."

Matz was projected to be New York's No. 5 starter.

Red Sox Sit Down Tyler Thornburg

Mar 28, 2017 7:46 AM

The Boston Red Sox scratched Tyler Thornburg from a scheduled appearance Monday against the Baltimore Orioles because of a spasm in his upper right trapezius.

Thornburg hasn't pitched in a Major League spring training game since March 1 because of weakness in his right shoulder. He "most likely" will open the season on the disabled list.

He is expected to undergo testing, including a possible MRI exam.

"If it's what I anticipate, probably not," Dave Dombrowski said. "But I can't rule anything out because I don't really know anything (other) than what we just found out, that he's got a trap that's tight. If it's a short-term situation, then I don't have a spot to offer somebody."

Drew Pomeranz Leaves Start With Left Triceps Tightness

Mar 20, 2017 6:55 AM

Drew Pomeranz left his exhibition start one inning earlier than expected on Sunday due to left triceps tightness.

Pomeranz first developed the tightness in the first inning against the Minnesota Twins and it persisted into the second frame. He threw 47 pitches and didn't come out for a third scheduled inning.

The left-hander told reporters he didn't think the injury was serious, but the Boston Red Sox will be careful. Pomeranz experienced left elbow/forearm stiffness late last season and received a stem-cell injection over the winter.
