Eight Teams On Pace To Lose 100 Or More Games

May 1, 2018 9:09 AM

The subject of tanking is likely to become more prevalent in Major League Baseball.

Heading into play this weekend, there were eight teams on pace to lose 100 or more games in 2018.

No team lost 100 games last season, while the Minnesota Twins were the only club to do so in 2016.

While Suspended, Joe Kelly Roams Fenway As Fan

Apr 30, 2018 8:04 AM

While serving a six-game suspension, Joe Kelly roamed Fenway Park as a fan on Sunday afternoon.

The Boston Red Sox rallied against the Tampa Bay Rays as Kelly left the suite he was sitting in to mingle with fans.

"I was in the suite, and we weren't getting any runs, and we were losing, so I moved and went out to the bleachers. We got a couple of runs," Kelly told Boston's WEEI. "I moved to another location, and that didn't work, so I moved to the Sam Adams Party Deck, and we ended up getting the runs. Then I watched the rest, when Craig [Kimbrel] came in, from the State Street Pavilion. I had to change locations. I was getting superstitious."

On Friday, WEEI reported that Kelly had seats above the Green Monster, but he spent time in three locations throughout the park, including the bleachers. On Sunday, several fans tweeted photos of Kelly's stint in the bleachers.

Robbie Ray Suffers Strained Right Oblique

Apr 30, 2018 12:34 AM

Diamondbacks pitcher Robbie Ray left Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Nationals in the second inning because of a strained right oblique.

After throwing a pitch to Washington's Matt Wieters, Ray called the trainer from the dugout and began motioning toward his right side. He exited the game after a brief conversation with the trainer and manager Torey Lovullo.

"I felt great up until that one pitch," Ray said. "I was probably in the middle of my delivery, I was letting go of the ball and just felt my side grab, and I wasn't able to finish the pitch and left it up and away. I just wasn't able to get anything on it."

Lovullo said Ray will undergo an MRI on Monday.

Apr 30, 2018 12:25 AM

Nick Kingham accomplished something Sunday that only one major league pitcher had achieved in the past century.

In his big league debut, Kingham carried a perfect game into the seventh inning to lead the Pirates to a 5-0 win over the Cardinals.

He joined Johnny Cueto in 2008 as the only pitchers in the past 100 years with one hit allowed, at least nine strikeouts and no walks in their debuts.

Dave Roberts Pulls Cody Bellinger For 'Lack Of Hustle'

May 1, 2018 9:09 AM

The Dodgers' lackluster start to the 2018 campaign is starting to show visible leakage, with the latest example coming during Los Angeles' 4-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.

Dave Roberts pulled last year's rookie of the year, Cody Bellinger, in the fifth inning for what the manager described as a lack of hustle.

"I felt there wasn't hustle on the play -- the ball that he hit 421 feet into right-center field, and he cruised into second base," Roberts told reporters, referring to a ball Bellinger smacked into the area called Triples Alley. "He plays every day, and there's certain expectations for the way we have to play the game. When you don't abide by that, we'll get somebody in there that will. It's pretty simple."
