Shohei Ohtani Will Return To Mound For Angels On Sunday

Aug 31, 2018 7:52 AM

The Los Angeles Angels have announced that Shohei Ohtani will return to the mound on Sunday night for the first time since spraining the ulnar collateral ligament in his right pitching elbow nearly three months ago.

The Angels will face the Houston Astros on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball.

Ohtani has thrown up to 50 pitches in the bullpen. It was initially feared that he might need Tommy John surgery.

"We will monitor that very closely," Mike Scioscia said. "We will have a range, but we are going to wait and talk internally to see what he is going to be able to do and see how the game is going."

Ohtani was excellent over nine starts before getting hurt, going 4-1 with a 3.10 ERA.

Rangers Move Martin Perez To Bullpen

Aug 30, 2018 7:40 AM

The Texas Rangers have moved Martin Perez to the bullpen for the remainder of the season.

They have also informed him that they don't plan on picking up his $7.5 million option for 2019.

"We told Martin that if the decision had to be made today, we probably wouldn't exercise the option," Jon Daniels said. "It's possible we could still work something out for him to continue his career here. We want to take this time to evaluate him in a bullpen role."

Perez, 27, has a 6.95 ERA in 68 2/3 innings this season.

Christian Yelich Hits For Cycle Against Reds

Aug 30, 2018 7:36 AM

Christian Yelich went 6-for-6 and hit for the cycle in the Milwaukee Brewers' 13-12 win over the Cincinnati Reds in 10 innings on Wednesday night.

Yelich is the eighth member of the Brewers to accomplish the feat and he tied a club record with the six hits. He is just the fourth player since 1920 to have six hits in a cycle.

"It's one of those things you never really expect to do," Yelich said. "Obviously, you've got to have some luck involved in it; that's always a factor when you do something like that."

Kenley Jansen Stops Taking Medication After Bad Outings

Aug 29, 2018 8:46 AM

After attributing a terrible week on the mound to medication prescribed to him for his heart condition, Kenley Jansen has stopped taking it.

Jansen spent 11 days on the disabled list with an irregular heartbeat and returned to go 0-2 with a blown save while allowing seven hits, five runs and four home runs in three one-inning appearances last week.

The Los Angeles Dodgers reliever said that he felt like he was "sleepwalking" on the field due to the medication.

"I thought the first day maybe it would get better," Jansen said. "Then the second day, it was the same. And the third day ... "

Jansen, who underwent heart surgery in 2012, expects to have a second surgery in the offseason.
