Child Struck By Line Drive In Houston

May 30, 2019 10:06 AM

A young fan at Wednesday's Chicago Cubs-Houston Astros game was struck by an Albert Almora Jr. foul ball and taken to the hospital.

The Cubs center fielder was very shaken up afterward.

Almora hit a fourth-inning line drive into the stands down the third-base line, where it struck the girl. She was picked up by a man who appeared to be with her, and he dashed up the stairs with the child at Minute Maid Park.

It took several minutes for Almora to compose himself and continue the at-bat, and players from both teams also appeared shaken up by the scene.

"I had to try to keep my composure during that at-bat, but when that half-inning was over, I just couldn't hold it anymore," Almora said.

After the fourth inning, Almora, who still appeared upset, approached a security guard in the stands near where the girl was sitting and spoke to the guard before the two embraced and a tearful Almora went back to the dugout. He said he was updated on the girl's condition.

"Unofficial things," Almora said of what the two shared. "I wish I could say more."

Cubs Won't Protest Loss To Nationals

May 20, 2019 7:53 AM

The Chicago Cubs have decided not to protest Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Washington Nationals.

Joe Maddon had argued that Nationals reliever Sean Doolittle used an illegal delivery in the ninth inning of the game and said that he was playing under protest. The Cubs then had 24 hours to submit an official grievance to the league, but they decided not to.

The double toe-tap Doolittle appeared to use as he delivered the ball to home plate has been deemed illegal in the past.

"You're trying to delineate what is right and what is wrong. In my mind it wasn't a judgment call. I thought it was black and white," Maddon said.

Jeopardy! Champion Dreams Of Working In MLB Front Office

May 2, 2019 9:36 AM

James Holzhauer, who has won 20 days in a row on Jeopardy!, grew up a fan of the Chicago Cubs and always dreamed of working in a Major League front office.

He recently tweeted, "I always dreamed of working in an MLB front office and ruining baseball, but I have to settle for ruining @Jeopardy instead."

The 34-year-old's winnings on the game show have reached $1,528,012.

"I kind of put it aside the last 10 years or so, but when I was a teenager, I was idolizing guys like Billy Beane and Theo Epstein, who were really bringing the statistical revolution to the masses," Holzhauer said. "I don't know if I'm the kind of networking/interpersonal skills guy who could become a GM, but being a guy who can help the team on making decisions on which guys to trade for and sign as free agents, that was the dream back then."

Holzhauer has used his sports-betting background to strategize how he approaches the "Jeopardy!" board of clues.

Cubs Will Option Addison Russell To Triple-A On Thursday

May 1, 2019 7:53 AM

Theo Epstein says the Chicago Cubs will option Addison Russell to Triple-A Iowa when his 40-game suspension for violating the league's domestic violence policy is up Thursday.

"There have been some real promising signs with his play. Six games just isn't enough to get fully up to speed to come up to the big league club," Epstein said.

Russell has been making progress in his off-the-field rehabilitation after accepting the suspension that stemmed from multiple allegations of abuse by his ex-wife, Melisa Reidy, according to the Cubs.

Under Major League rules, Russell was allowed seven days in the minors as his suspension neared its end, but the Cubs have decided to leave him at Triple-A while he acclimates himself to second base again.
