Cubs Reach Two-Year, $10M Deal With Drew Smyly

Dec 13, 2017 7:52 AM

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a two-year deal with Drew Smyly worth $10 million.

Smyly can earn $7 million in performance bonuses, according to a source.

He never threw a pitch for the Seattle Mariners in 2017 because of arm troubles that led to Tommy John surgery in June. Smyly will likely miss most, if not all, of the coming season as well.

Smyly, 27, is 31-27 with a 3.74 ERA over parts of five seasons with the Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays.

Chris Archer is drawing a lot of interest on the trade market and the Tampa Bay Rays have heard from the Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins.

Red Sox Have Inquired About Trading For Kyle Schwarber

Dec 12, 2017 9:05 AM

The Boston Red Sox, looking to add to their offense, have inquired with the Chicago Cubs about trading for Kyle Schwarber, according to a report.

The Red Sox would be able to mask Schwarber's defensive shortcomings by playing him at designated hitter.

Boston finished last in the American League with 168 home runs in 2017, the first time that has happened since 1993.

To this point, the Cubs are considered unlikely to deal Schwarber.

Stanton Will Only Approve Deal To Astros, Cubs, Dodgers, Yankees

Dec 8, 2017 2:07 PM

Giancarlo Stanton has declared that he'll only accept a trade to the Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Yankees, according to a report.

Despite a high price tag, the Yankees are "kicking the tires" on Stanton.

Stanton had been linked heavily to the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants this month. He met with both clubs, but his full no-trade clause has allowed him to indicate he doesn't want to join either club.

The slugger is owed $295 million over the next 10 years.

Cubs Agree Upon Three-Year, $38M Deal With Tyler Chatwood

Dec 8, 2017 7:16 AM

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a three-year contract with Tyler Chatwood.

The deal is worth $38 million, according to a report.

"Uber-talented right-hander moving into his prime," Theo Epstein said of Chatwood. "He has great makeup. We think his best days are ahead of him. We're getting him into an environment where we think he can gain consistency with all of his pitches and play to his strengths a little bit more."

After pitching for the Colorado Rockies, Chatwood said he won't miss having Coors Field as his home ballpark.

"Yeah, it's going to be nice," he said. "Kind of be able to have the same routine and work on stuff and have your ball do the same thing, home and away, it's going to be pretty nice.

"I can focus on making my pitches. I can work on it more consistently, I would say. I don't have to worry about if it's going to move or if it's not going to move, or if I'm going to have to spin it different. Just focus on being more consistent and using my full arsenal instead of not using everything."
