Andrews, Wilk Create App To Limit Tommy John Surgeries

Sep 27, 2014 5:58 AM

Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Kevin Wilk have created an iOS application designed to educate players, parents and coaches on how to prevent pitching injuries.

The app, Throw Like a Pro, will be released in the coming weeks. The aim is to limit the rash of Tommy John surgeries that Andrews has performed on Major League players recently.

It will feature four main elements, all centered around scientific data and input from Andrews and Wilk.

Billingsley Throws Sim Game At Dodger Stadium

Nov 21, 2014 11:16 AM

Chad Billingsley, who had Tommy John surgery in April 2013, threw 30 pitches in a two-inning simulated game at Dodger Stadium on Thursday.

"It's been a long process, and I just got to keep working until I get back out there in a game," Billingsley said. "The arm is feeling really good right now, and I'm really happy with the way it has responded."

The right-hander worked against teammates Jamie Romak and Chone Figgins.

Don Mattingly said the Dodgers "will see how he bounces back, then decide if there's another simulated game, or he goes out [to pitch rehab games in the Minor Leagues]."

Votto To Remain On DL, Listed As Day-To-Day

Oct 31, 2014 6:15 AM

Joey Votto won't come off the disabled list when eligible Saturday. The Cincinnati Reds have no timetable for his return from a strained left quadriceps.

Votto is getting treatment in Cincinnati and is "as day to day as they come," according to Bryan Price.

The first baseman is taking ground balls, and the next step would see him take live batting practice.

He is hitting .257/.410/.449 with six home runs and 12 RBIs this season.

White Sox Don't Anticipate Rehab Stint For Abreu

Sep 12, 2014 6:25 AM

The Chicago White Sox are hoping that Jose Abreu will return from the disabled list when eligible on June 2 without a Minor League rehab stint.

"As of right now, there's not a plan for him to go out [on a rehab assignment]," Robin Ventura said. "He would stay here. I think [trainer] Herm [Schneider] wants him here just to watch him, and we'll figure out if we can get somebody here to simulate something to make him do it here instead of having to go play in a game."

Abreu hasn't played in a game since May 17 after being placed on the DL with inflammation in his left ankle.

Red Sox Place Buchholz On DL

Oct 31, 2014 6:45 AM

The Boston Red Sox have placed Clay Buchholz on the disabled list with a hyperextended left knee.

Buchholz has been struggling this season and the Red Sox say the right-hander suffered the injury during Monday's start against the Atlanta Braves.

The decision to place Buchholz on the DL came after a bullpen session on Wednesday.

"When he got into the bullpen, probably the 18- or 20-pitch mark, there was some feeling of some instability," John Farrell said. "Can't say that it's structural, but when he tried to get increased intensity and get some finish to pitches, there was that sensation that was being felt, and we shut him down at that time. As I mentioned before he went out to the bullpen, we weren't going to put him at risk if he felt anything coming out of that situation the other day. That's where he felt it; it was just with that instability trying to get through some pitches."

Orioles Plan For Santana To Reach Majors By Mid-June

Oct 31, 2014 8:40 AM

The Baltimore Orioles have presented Johan Santana with a plan to have him join their rotation by mid-June.

Santana, whose minor league opt-out clause expires on Friday, has been shown a plan that could see him with Baltimore around June 18.

The plan includes one more extended spring training start, a start with Triple-A Norfolk and a start with Double-A Bowie on June 13.

"Ideally, the last outing would be six innings if the other club would cooperate," Buck Showalter told reporters. "If these three options work out, he'd be an option for us. It's one thing being able to get through it, it's another thing to have people evaluate whether it will work up here."

Phillies Don't Know When Lee Will Return

Sep 18, 2014 4:15 AM

Cliff Lee was scheduled to be evaluated by Philadelphia Phillies physician Michael Ciccotti on Wednesday.

The Phillies don't know when Lee will be able to return from a mild elbow strain.

"It could be up to a month, it could be a month and a half, it could be 3 weeks," Ruben Amaro said.

"I have no idea when the guy is going to be ready to pitch. I really don't. I would think it be sooner rather than later, but I have no timetable until he's up and throwing again."
