Prince Fielder is expected to undergo season-ending surgery next week to repair a herniated disk in his neck.

When the Texas Rangers acquired Fielder this offseason they assumed the insurance policy the Detroit Tigers took out on Fielder's contract before the 2012 season.

The policy will pay the Rangers at the rate of 50 cents on the dollar after a time period that acts like a deductible.

"Under that scenario it would result in the Rangers' recouping a little more than $2 million of the $24 million owed him this season," writes Evan Grant.
