Mariners Shut Down Taijuan Walker

Sep 17, 2014 5:03 PM

The Seattle Mariners have shut down Taijuan Walker for at least one week after exams revealed inflammation in the bursa of his right shoulder.

Lloyd McClendon said the decision was made after Walker flew to Los Angeles to get a second opinion on the sore shoulder that has limited him during Spring Training.

"It definitely (stinks)," Walker said. "I feel good about the situation. I'd rather not push it and fight through something and make it worse. I'm just going to take the time off, get healthy and move on."

Walker is one of the top pitching prospects in baseball.

Greinke Leaves With Strained Right Calf

Sep 13, 2014 9:15 AM

Zack Greinke left his first spring training start in the first inning Thursday with a strained right calf.

Greinke was joined on the mound by trainer Stan Conte and manager Don Mattingly after throwing just four pitches. He left the field and retreated to the clubhouse with Conte.

"I think it's minor, but we'll see," Greinke said. "I don't know exactly what it was, but it felt kind of like a cramp."

The Dodgers termed Greinke's removal "precautionary," but even a small injury could push back his season debut.

Yankees Aren't Worried About Jeter's Health

Sep 10, 2014 5:48 AM

The New York Yankees claim they aren't worried about the health of Derek Jeter heading into the 2014 season.

"I am more curious about the weather every day rather than what he will look like," Brian Cashman said. "I would rather not sit in the rain in the stands. I don't want anybody to get hurt, but am I curious about what Derek looks like? No. I am more curious about the weather report because weather can screw things up. Derek is not going to screw things up."

Jeter is weary of answering questions about the twice-fractured left ankle which hasn't been an issue to date.

"I am looking forward to being out there," he said. "The first few days of spring training you go through the drills and get in baseball shape."

Hamels Throws 35 Pitches Off Mound

Sep 13, 2014 9:15 AM

Cole Hamels threw 35 pitches off a mound on Wednesday for the first time this spring.

Hamels is dealing with shoulder tendinitis and barring a setback, he shouldn't miss more than two starts.

"I would probably say 10 days maybe. Maybe. But he looks so healthy, he might not be 10 days. He might just be a week. Some guys just don't need as long in spring training. Some guys need longer," said pitching coach Bob McClure.

"Healthwise, he doesn't look like he needs longer, but I don't want to rush him. To be conservative, I would say two weeks. To be not conservative, I'd say [he could be ready] five to seven days into the season."

Hamels threw his fastball, changeup and cutter without any issues.

"I was pain-free," the 30-year-old said. "Ultimately, I feel like I'm in a really good position to progress and get into the schedule, like everybody else did a couple of weeks ago."

Josh Hamilton Out At Least Two Weeks

Sep 13, 2014 9:15 AM

Josh Hamilton will be sidelined for at least two weeks because of a strained calf muscle.

He was injured during a spring training workout Tuesday.

Hamilton left the clubhouse on crutches after getting hurt during a baserunning drill.

"It's something that will definitely heal on its own and it's just going to take some time and the timeframe we're getting is the minimum of a couple of weeks," Mike Scioscia said.

"As of right now we're very optimistic that he'll get back in here and he can get back in shape for the start of the season."

Jaime Garcia Seeks Second Opinion On Shoulder

Oct 31, 2014 6:15 AM

Jaime Garcia will seek a second opinion on his surgically repaired shoulder from Dr. James Andrews before deciding his next course of action.

Garcia requested the second opinion even before consulting with St. Louis Cardinals doctors.

"Based on the MRI and overall, we feel good," John Mozeliak said. "I would like to see what the other doctor has to say and we will go from there."

The 27-year old had been the favorite to become the lone left-hander in the Cardinals rotation. Mozeliak said this setback makes it unlikely that Garcia will be ready for the start of the season.

Matt Kemp will have on MRI on his troublesome left ankle later this week.

The exam should set the course for the remainder of Kemp's spring.

If doctors clear Kemp to resume running, he could be playing in spring games within a week or so and would have a chance of being on the field shortly after Opening Day.

The Dodgers have already ruled out Kemp for their season opener March 22 in Australia.

Headley Out Two Weeks With Calf Strain

Oct 17, 2014 10:36 AM

Chase Headley will be out at least two weeks because of a calf strain.

The injury will give Bud Black a chance to look at other options for the San Diego Padres.

Headley has said that he isn't sure if he will come to an agreement on a long-term contract with the Padres before the season begins.

Black said there would be four or five players he'll give a look to at third base while Headley is out.
