Buchholz To Undergo Minor Knee Surgery

Oct 11, 2014 10:34 PM

Clay Buchholz will undergo surgery on his right knee Tuesday, according to Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington.

The procedure will be performed by Dr. Peter Asnis and Buchholz is expected to have a normal offseason.

"It's a meniscus repair," Cherington said. "This is something that he's had some off-and-on symptoms for some time now. Not something that prevents him from pitching, but we just want to use the offseason to take care of this. It's a relatively routine procedure. Pretty quick recovery, shouldn't affect his offseason."

Cherington said that the ailment is something Buchholz has dealt with over the course of at least this season.

Rangers Shut Down Jurickson Profar

Sep 26, 2014 10:37 PM

The Texas Rangers are shutting down Jurickson Profar for a few months in an effort to rehab his right shoulder to get it right before the 2015 season.

Profar has missed the entire season with tear in his teres muscle in his right shoulder.

"Bottom line is we've gone down a similar path before and definitely a level of frustration that we haven't been able to get better answers and to get him back to this point," Jon Daniels said. "This is based on everyone we've consulted with and Jurickson's feeling and preference that he can strengthen his shoulder on his own through a rehab process this is what we think is the best course of action right now."

Daniels said surgery isn't an option right now because there are no guarantees that surgery will fix the problem. Profar hurt the shoulder for the first time in 2010 diving back to a base. He aggravated it again in winter ball last year.

Angels Hope To Have Shoemaker For Playoffs

Sep 24, 2014 12:03 PM

Matt Shoemaker is unlikely to pitch in the team's final five regular-season games due to a mild left rib-cage strain, but the Los Angeles Angels are hopeful he can take the mound in the playoffs.

Shoemaker played some light catch Monday, the first time he's thrown since suffering the injury against the Seattle Mariners on Sept. 15.

"It's better, but it's still sore," Shoemaker said. "I'm getting into a lot of physical activity, moving around, getting ready to go. There's still no timetable, but I feel very optimistic about getting on a mound again."

Ellsbury Aims To Return Soon

Oct 21, 2014 5:22 PM

Jacoby Ellsbury sat out Saturday's game with a mild hamstring strain, but the New York Yankees outfielder still hopes to return this season.

"I'm going to do everything I can to be back as soon as possible but today I'm just basically going to do as much treatment as possible to see how it responds," Ellsbury said.

Ellsbury left Friday night's 5-3 win against the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth inning with a hamstring strain suffered while he was running out a grounder in the bottom of the fourth.

The Yankees have eight games left in the regular season and are 4.5 games out of the Wild Card race.

The Washington Nationals have activated Ryan Zimmerman from the disabled list.

Zimmerman has been out with a Grade 3 hamstring strain since late July.
