Kalish Will Miss Start Of 2012 Season

Sep 25, 2014 7:48 PM

Red Sox outfielder Ryan Kalish revealed Thursday that he underwent left shoulder surgery in November to repair a torn labrum. This, on the heels of neck surgery he had in September to deal with recurring issues he had experienced from a vicious collision back in April. Kalish, who spent the final two months with the Red Sox as a primary starter in 2010, will likely miss the first several weeks of the 2012 season. The labrum surgery, which is on Kalish's throwing shoulder, was performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles. "It's not the easiest rehab in the world, and we're only a few weeks into it," Kalish said. "I'm working to get my range of motion back and will go from there. Nobody has told me a timetable, but I know it will be a while."

A-Rod Has Knee Treated In Germany

Sep 7, 2014 6:54 AM

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez turned to a new therapy to treat his knee and shoulder. Rodriguez traveled to Germany to receive Orthokine therapy on his right knee and left shoulder, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. NBA star Kobe Bryant recommended the procedure after having it performed on his balky knee and ankle. The procedure uses the patient's own blood, which is drawn from the arm and put into a centrifuge to separate out a certain protein. The mix with the protein is then injected into the affected joint. Rodriguez's treatment was first reported by the New York Post.

Chamberlain Won't Be Ready For Opening Day

Sep 18, 2014 2:26 AM

The Yankees won't have Joba Chamberlain on their active roster come Opening Day. The right-hander is still recovering from Tommy John surgery. "He's committed and dedicated and that's great, but we have to be sure to maintain that he does everything in the right pace and doesn't get too far ahead," says Yankee general manager Brian Cashman. "It's hard to say what his timetable is. He's a reliever, so you don't have to build his innings up, but it's anywhere from 10 to 13 months and he had his surgery in June. Could he be a little earlier? It's safe to say June or July "If you ask him, he'd probably say he'd be ready out of spring training. He'll feel physically like he can, but we won't take that risk. The time frame is usually for a reason." Chamberlain says he knows his recovery could face setbacks. "It's a marathon, I get that," he says.

Concussions 'Have Not Been An Issue' For Morneau

Oct 16, 2014 11:27 PM

After a pair of injury-plagued seasons, the Twins are hoping that Justin Morneau will piece things back together in 2012. He missed the final three months of the 2010 season with a concussion and worked his way back during spring training last March, but a bevy of injuries limited him to only 69 games. Morneau also underwent three surgeries in September -- left wrist, right foot (bone spurs) and left knee (cyst) -- and he's kept an extremely low profile this offseason. "I'm alright with him right now," Ryan said. "I haven't had any red flags go up right now. You won't know until we get to Fort Myers and get him out there for a number of games and at-bats, and the repetitions and things that are going to need to be done for him to be confident he's going to be able to play 140 games or so. But right now he's OK. His wrist certainly is healing, and he should start being able to swing the bat here in the next couple weeks."

Johan Santana May Not Be Ready For Opening Day

Feb 10, 2014 2:32 PM

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson casually revealed this week that left-hander Johan Santana may not be ready for the start of the 2012 season. "We do have some question marks, of course, with Santana being one of them," Alderson said of the lefty pitcher's return from his September 2010 shoulder surgery. "We think he's going to be ready, but he might not be. That's where the [pitching] depth becomes important." Santana had hoped to pitch for the Mets by the end of last season, but setbacks prevented him from getting back to the majors.
