Xander Bogaerts Leaves Game With Shoulder Injury

May 21, 2024 7:55 AM

Xander Bogaerts left the San Diego Padres' game against the Atlanta Braves on Monday with a left shoulder injury.

Bogaerts landed on the shoulder while diving for a bases-loaded grounder hit by Ronald Acuna, Jr. in the third inning. Bogaerts stopped the grounder but was unable to make a throw on Acuna's run-scoring infield hit.

He immediately signaled to the bench for assistance, and a trainer examined the second baseman before escorting him off the field.

Mike Shildt said imaging tests on Bogaerts' shoulder were negative and more tests had been scheduled.

"The initial feedback is the best-case scenario," Shildt said.

Gerrit Cole To Face Live Hitters

May 21, 2024 7:49 AM

Gerrit Cole will take another step in his recovery from nerve inflammation in his elbow on Tuesday when he faces hitters for the first time since landing on the injured list in late March.

Cole felt good Sunday after throwing 40 pitches in his fifth bullpen session on Saturday.

"Yeah, it's important," New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "Bouncing back from a two-up bullpen with some guys standing in on him, and I know (he was) feeling good (Sunday) coming in.

"We just want to continue to progress and continue to stack good days, and that's another step along the way of getting out there on the bump and facing hitters. I'm sure there's an added little adrenaline that goes with that. All important steps on his return."

Cole, 33, is coming off a season in which he went 15-4 while leading the American League in ERA (2.63) and innings pitched (209). He struck out 222 and walked 48. He won the 2023 AL Cy Young award.

Rangers Move Max Scherzer To 60-Day IL

May 16, 2024 9:54 AM

The Texas Rangers have moved Max Scherzer to the 60-day injured list.

The club initially avoided making the move at the start of the season when there was some hope that Scherzer might return sooner than expected from offseason back surgery.

When Scherzer made his initial rehab appearance April 24, he appeared to be on track to possibly rejoin the rotation this month, but he was scratched from his next scheduled rehab start six days later because of right thumb soreness that team doctors later identified as a nerve issue that extended to his right triceps.

He had cortisone injections and Botox injections to the shoulder and neck area May 9 to alleviate pain associated with nerve issue.

"It's aggravating to deal with this, but we are talking about your nerves," Scherzer said. "You can be screwing up your arm for the rest of your life. We've got to figure out a way to manage it."

The earliest Scherzer can return to the Rangers active roster is now May 28.

Mets' Kodai Senga To Test Arm With Bullpen Session

May 14, 2024 8:23 AM

Kodai Senga, who has not pitched for the New York Mets this season, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday that could determine how soon he returns to game action.

Senga said that he is overhauling his mechanics as part of his rehab process: "With my current mechanics, I didn't think I'd be able to come back at 100%."

The 31-year-old was shut down in February because of a shoulder strain.

He received a PRP injection and was initially shut down for three weeks. Senga's mechanical reinvention has prolonged his absence.

Rhys Hoskins will undergo an MRI after a hamstring injury forced him to leave the Milwaukee Brewers' game on Monday night in the second inning.

Hoskins said he got hurt while rounding first base as he singled to right field.

Pat Murphy said after the game that Hoskins would have an MRI in the morning.

"It seemed to be like right as I was getting to the turn there," Hoskins said. "I was kind of thinking two out of the box just because of where the ball was placed. I just got into the turn and felt it grab."

May 13, 2024 7:54 AM

San Francisco Giants center fielder Jung Hoo Lee left Sunday's game with a dislocated left shoulder.

"He was sore," Snitker said. "I just didn't want to take any chances, so we'll look at him again tomorrow and see what's up."
