Tanaka Returns To New York With Arm Soreness

Sep 18, 2014 3:47 AM

Masahiro Tanaka's attempt to return from a torn elbow ligament without undergoing Tommy John surgery hit a roadblock Friday when the Yankees announced he would return to New York ahead of the team with what was termed as "general soreness'' in his pitching arm.

"I want to be a little bit cautious. I haven't been throwing for a couple of weeks and then I started throwing again and built up the number of pitches that I've been throwing,'' Tanaka said through his interpreter, Shingo Horie. "I think that's the reason why there's a little bit of extra soreness in the arm itself."

Tanaka Feels Rusty After Simulated Game

Sep 19, 2014 2:31 PM

Masahiro Tanaka threw 49 pitches in a simulated game on the field at Comerica Park on Thursday morning.

The right-hander came out of the session with no pain in his elbow.

"I'm optimistic," Joe Girardi said. "I haven't seen anything that leads me to believe he won't take the next step. At no point has he said he's felt anything in his arm. I think he has normal soreness after a day like today, but I am optimistic."

Tanaka was less enthusiastic after the approximately 30-minute workout.

"I'm actually still not there yet," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "I think some of the balls I am throwing I'm still not able to hit my spots. The rust is still there, so I still have some work to do to get back to game-ready."

Van Slyke Sprains Ankle, Blames Arizona's 'Bad Grass'

Sep 15, 2014 6:45 PM

Scott Van Slyke left Wednesday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with what the Los Angeles Dodgers called a mild right ankle sprain.

He later blamed the Diamondbacks' grass for the injury.

"They've got bad grass here," Van Slyke said.

Van Slyke said the ground gave way beneath his ankle as he planted to throw. Replays showed that Van Slyke's ankle bent to almost a 45-degree ankle.

"That side of my ankle's loose, so I think it will be all right," he said. "I think it just went further than it normally does."

Royals Will Skip Ventura's Turn In Rotation

Oct 31, 2014 10:39 AM

The Kansas City Royals are skipping Yordano Ventura's next turn in the rotation to rest his sore back.

Ned Yost said Tuesday night that Ventura experienced some pain in his lower back after his last start Friday night in Texas. An MRI exam showed some fluid consistent with inflammation but no damage.

"It's gotten better over the last couple of days but it's something we don't really want to push," Yost said. "Could he pitch tomorrow? Yeah, probably. Maybe. But as a precaution we think kit's smarter to go ahead and bang him one start and go from there."

The rookie is 10-9 with a 3.40 ERA this season.
