Astros, Daz Cameron Agree To $4M Bonus

Jun 29, 2015 8:10 PM

The Houston Astros have agreed to a deal with No. 37 overall pick Daz Cameron that will include a $4 million signing bonus.

Cameron was in Houston on Monday afternoon to sign the contract and will reportedly be introduced at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday.

A high school outfielder from Georgia, Cameron was rated by most as a Top 15 talent in this year's draft, but signability issues caused him to slip.

Jun 24, 2015 8:25 AM

The Houston Astros are getting closer to finalizing contract agreements with No. 2 pick Alex Bregman and No. 37 pick Daz Cameron.

Nothing will be announced on Wednesday, but Jeff Luhnow is hopeful that the pair will be signed during the club's upcoming homestand.

Cameron is expected to sign well over the slot value for his selection.

Indians Reach Deal With Brady Aiken

Jun 19, 2015 2:44 PM

The Cleveland Indians have reached an agreement on a contract with Brady Aiken, who they took in the first round of this month's First-Year Player Draft.

Cleveland took a gamble on the 18-year-old, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery and won't pitch until 2016.

Aiken was selected by Houston with the overall first pick last year after going 7-0 with a 1.06 ERA in 11 starts as a senior at Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder was unable to work out a contract with the Astros and had surgery in March.

Scott Boras Feels He Was 'Censored' During MLB Draft

Jun 10, 2015 4:11 PM

Scott Boras was critical of MLB Network for its televised draft coverage Tuesday, saying the network has "censored" analysts from mentioning his company and failed to acknowledge the beneficial role his group plays in advising amateur players.

Boras served as an adviser to seven first- or second-round picks this year.

He represents Atlanta high school outfielder Daz Cameron and Louisville pitcher Kyle Funkhouser, both of whom were selected in lower spots than anticipated before the draft began.

"What I find interesting is, MLB has censored its announcers from referencing our company,'' Boras said in a text message. "MLB is not committed to a free journalistic standard."

Boras' name was referenced on one occasion during Monday night's broadcast, when MLB Network analyst Greg Amsinger cited the agent's involvement as a likely reason for the two players slipping, and draft authority Jonathan Mayo half-jokingly referred to him as "Lord Voldemort."

Position Players Dominate First Round Of MLB Draft

Jun 9, 2015 4:58 PM

The first round of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft was dominated by shortstops, who went 1-2-3, but overall position players were a hot commodity.

Twenty-one of the 36 first-round picks were position players, including seven of the first 10 selections.

There was a run on pitchers in the middle of the round. There were just three left-handed pitchers taken in the first round.

In 2014, 20 of the 34 first-round picks were pitchers and seven south paws were selected.

First Round Nearly Split Between College, High School Players

Jun 9, 2015 10:18 AM

The first round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft was nearly split between college and high school players.

Nineteen of the 36 selections, which included several compensation picks, were out of college. If you include Brady Aiken, who was pitching for IMG Academy before undergoing Tommy John surgery, there were 17 high school players selected in Monday night's first round.

College players dominated the top 10. Seven landed among first 10 players drafted.
