Braves To Sign Kolby Allard

Jul 10, 2015 7:21 AM

The Atlanta Braves are expected to sign first-round pick Kolby Allard despite recent reports that he might instead attend UCLA.

Atlanta drafted Allard with the fourteenth overall pick last month. The pick carries a slot value of $2,842,400. The high school left-hander likely would have been selected earlier had it not been for a stress reaction in his back.

Keith Law reports that Allard will receive a bonus of $3,042,000 to sign.

Astros Pleased With Draft Haul After Issues In 2014

Jul 10, 2015 7:15 AM

The Houston Astros have signed all their top picks after an impressive 2015 amateur draft, a welcome development after a disappointing run last year.

Houston had a record amount of signing-bonus money available this year because of the No. 2 pick they received for Brady Aiken, the top overall pick in 2014 who went unsigned amidst controversy over the health of his elbow.

"The 2014 draft, certainly, that part of it didn't go the way we want it to," amateur scouting director Mike Elias said. "I don't think I'll ever forget about that unfortunate part of that draft class. I think we took a lot of other good players in that draft, but to certainly not sign the first overall pick, have what happened happen, and have the other complications that arose from that occur, it was an unpleasant experience I think for everyone involved.

"But we did receive compensation in this year's draft in terms of the second overall pick. I'm really excited about Alex Bregman. I'm excited about Kyle Tucker. ... And yeah, to come away with three top 10 players, essentially, out of two high picks and a (compensation round pick at No. 37), it's huge. And it is, I think, the optimal outcome for the compensation that we received for not signing Brady last year."

First-Rounder Kolby Allard May Choose UCLA Over Braves

Jul 6, 2015 6:02 PM

The Atlanta Braves have signed all of their top picks with the exception of first-round pick Kolby Allard.

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that it's looking like there's a "legit chance" that Allard will honor his commitment to UCLA rather than sign with the Braves.

Atlanta drafted Allard with the 14th overall pick, which comes a slot value of $2,842,200.
